Not too big a fan of vehicles that can only go fast in a straight line, but go for it if that's what floats your boat.

Most people on this forum won't be of much help, but there are a few that have drag racing experience that might be able to help you.

Personally if off-roading isn't desired, I'd set it up similar to the GMC Typhoon. Go fast and turn, always a winner in my book.

If I remember KYliberty touched the 13s with a 75 shot and some mods. He didnt have every mod available though(but did have a semi buitl 3.7), so yes it is possible to make the KJ a quick for fun dragster. Will it ever be top fuel? Hell no! But fun for a weekend at the track where you embarrass a bunch of imports or lightly modded v8s that dont expect it. The 3.7l and the whole jeep as is will never be a super dragster, but something to haul booty in and surprise the power adder crowd it can do.

Just dont expect support if you want to go drag only as thats just ruining a jeep.

What fun is that going in a straight line? Fun in th e1/4 mile starts at 8 sec and below.

Unless its john shepards street driven 7 sec talon I disagree. The fun of racing is everyone watching you drive away on the street saying wow thats his DD??? Different strokes for different folks.

depends on how deep your pockets are and if thats your only DD as well
anything can be built to go fast, back in 73 we put a 396 in the back seat of a Corvair, was it fun HECK yes, was it a every day DD HECK NO! Did it last long HECK no but again it was fun while it lasted ! :ROTFL:

I totally hear you. I was there once myself. dont want to burst your bubble or anything, just trying to save you from going down the same path or atleast let you know what your in for. I ended up dumping alot of money into a vehicle...engine mods, suspensions mods, all the flashy polished crap under the hood, parts that no one would ever see but me and my mechanic were color matched or stainless steel. I ended up with a vehicle that looked unique and kinda cool, and performed good for what it was but not nearly as good as if i would have just taken all that money and bought something new and better from the get go. That and every other day stuff would break. Once you start modding it is an endless nightmare of crap breaking. you build one part up something down the line is weak and breaks. Just not worth it. and then the final kick in the balls is when you want to get rid of it because your sick of the mess....your lucky to get kbb value even if the thing is running well.

The 3.7 held up for a year in mine with a 75 hp shot. Of course, a tuning mistake with a 125 hp shot broke a couple valves and scorched a couple cylinders. It was fun to play with while I was waiting for a good lift kit to come out.

Dropped a new motor in and Frankenlifted it. With the computer, ported heads, custom torque converter, shift reprogramming kit, 4.10's, dtt, cold air hood, ported throttle body, headers, and exhaust, it really runs well with the 245/75R16's. It's what I wanted in the first place. There just weren't many parts out for the KJ's when I bought mine a decade ago so I played around a little while waiting. I like my KJ so much more now that it's built into a real Jeep.

I would suggest some baby steps first...race what you got...look what is out there in "bracket racing" ect.

Heck, I took out my Jeep Liberty CRD and had fun...but not as much fun as my SCCA Road Racing 1st Gen RX-7 ... or ... my 1987 RX-7 putting 470hp to the rear wheels.

Check my sig for times on the CRD. Thru GreenDieselEngineering.com I can get the turbo upgrade and add at least 12 mph to the top end alone...and get over 32mpg hwy.

I agree with all here. Of course I am new to the Jeep world. That being said I used to be fairly in tine with the import market. So I can say away from the 3000GT even if it is a VR4. Any model of that car is extremely heavy. Yes an EVO motor is fast in an EVO but you run into weight and a 3000 GT is almost twice the weight. Remember the GT is. Grand Tourer (go fast on the freeway for a long time comfortably). Personally if you want something that can be a sleeper and has tons of aftermarket. Look for a Mitsubishi Eclipse GSX and remove the GSX badging. All wheel drive turbo eclipse that looks like all the rest.

I'd find a 2 wheel drive thats got a ton of miles on it and start from there
with that you could do almost anything you wanted, small block with the motor sit back a little, different trans/ rearend, lowered some bet it would surprise a lot of folks

Take a trip out to your local race scene and LLLEEEAARRRRNNNNN.

Put those deep pockets towards something like a fox body mustang or an s13. You could spend a fraction of the money and be much happier with the outcome.

On a side note, I'm impressed with the KJ community! The s13, fb, and fc chassis are close to my heart :D (I come from the drifting world).

welcome to the KJ world

the opposite of the Fox body world :P

and that's not a slam, nothin's really cheap, or common over here :P

several of us have put enough $ in a KJ to build 2 or 3 foxes into competitive cars

hell troys got about 4 10 second fox bodies , 2 under the front and 2 under the rear, by that gauge hes pushin 500hp per wheel haha

Well, I hope money isn't a problem considering all the custom fabrication you'll need. By no means am I trying to insult your intelligence, but with how you're talking I'm assuming you don't have the experience to take on such a radical idea. Most shops will probably either laugh or turn you away.

I can relate to the whole, "going against the grain" idea, but there's a difference between being a non-conformist and being naive, just sayin'.

However, if I was to do it, it would go a little something like this:
-strip/cut out anything and everything not essential (especially 4wd, interrior, spare, a/c, etc.)
-cut your springs in half and slam that slut (at least try to  )
-drop in a crd
-slap a big ole' snail on there
-upgrade your fuel
-replace grill with a HUGE front mount

(and here's the kicker)

-wait and see what breaks first
