Need Tire Recommendations

I have a 2005 Jeep Liberty CRD. Everything is stock. It fishtails when the roads are even slightly wet going around curves. I'm not a jackrabbit driver.
This is dangerous. I thought I saw a post recommending tires, for this problem, a while back but can't seem to find it now.
I don't drive off road at all.

We have had great results with Dunlop Radial Rover SL ATs in the stock size. Run them at about 36 psi, cold. Rotate every 5K. Good alignment balance and Bilstein shocks and we get 50 K before going below 5/32" when I replace. Excellent in the wet. Remember, going bigger than stock really hurts MPGs.

Before doing any recommendation people need to know the condition of your tires and your KJ, do you have the OEM limited slip rear differential? Are you gone use your KJ in extrem offroad condition? Your needs are based on what you project to do and what kind of confort you like, mud, sand, gravel road, Ice, heavy snow or paved road there is a tire for every kind of condition but there is no magic do-it-all donuts.

I'd like something quiet, (as I do a LOT of driving) and safe.

i have the same problem.
the solution ? get used to it!
I dont think there a tire that can take the kick of the Diesel in wet curve.
When my wife is driving the KJ, i switch in 4x4 mode, that helps.
The only time i forgot to do it, it started raining and she did a 180 degree in a curve on the wet road, she hit the road side with the back wheel and broke the rear axle....
... but i still love both, the wife and the car :CAMPING:

I had the same fish tailing issue with mine in the rain when I got it. I changed out the Good year tires that came on it since they were over have worn out for something else in 245/70R16 which is wider and a littler taller than the stock size. I got Hercules Terra Trac AT which is not a huge name brand but they seem to do well in rain snow and off road too what little off road I do. I also am a bit more careful in the rain not to be too heavy footed as well but it is better with a newer better tire.

Goodyear fortera tripletred 245 70 16, I never ever slip on wet pavement on these tires and they are good in the snow with an excellent speed rating. Longevity is in question though.... they just don't last past 30,000 miles at least mine haven't.

Michelin LTX M/S2 245 70 16tire is better than or equal to the tripletred with a lifespan that surpasses most or all tires out there. It's known as the best. A set of these will be my next purchase when the tripletreds wear out.

What are you folks doing in your KJ to get it to fishtale? Everytime it starts to get fishy the ESC kicks in and takes all the fun out of life. Even witht eh ESC turned "off" I cant do it and trust me I have tried. Kumho no longer makes the tires I use so I am in th emarket for new tires as well. Unfortunately H-Speed rated tires from Kumho in the size I use are no longer made.

05's don't have ESP...

Mine did that a couple times when new with the crappy Goodyear ST tires they came with. Changed to 225/75/16 Grabber 2's and the problem went away, when they were toast after 70K changed to 235/70/16 Grabber 2's that I honestly don't notice any difference from the 225/75, but with all 4 ties does give at least a couple more inches of rubber on the road

Simple..........No ESC on CRD 2005! Only the 2006 got it! :mrgreen:

Millage to have a idea of what is subject to need service...But you just whant to know what to do and get a quiet set of tires right? Ok then..

Let assume you have a limited slip rear diff and he is in good condition, dont worry you can always fishtale! With Turbo lag, slippery tarmac and a limited slip diff, you dont need to push very hard on the pedal to loose it...Wen the turbo catch up and let go a huge amount of power and torque to the rear wheels (up to 260pds/F37) your gone.. To limite this you need to transfert some of that power to the front wheels , If your lucky and have the NV242 transfert case just shift the lever in 4W full time to transfert 40% of the power/torque to the front wheels (Up to 104pds/F37) and enjoy a AWD traction. (Topan was right about this

)

Now talking about quiet tires, your best bet is AT tires, they offert good mpg quiet ride limited off road use but some even give you good traction in snow.On Tire rack site you can find tire survey test for all the A/T they sold, you may find the best bang for the buck in this list for your wallet who knowse!

ALL us CRDs have the 242 transfer case.

with the traction control thing the 06 has you can get it to spin and fishtail some but it does put a stop to all that. I will say that a good AT tire helps. the engine does put out a lot of power and in less than good conditions bad tires are not going to help.

when i still had my stock good years i just threw it in to 4wd when that happend on wet roads that fixed that. when thsoe tires were worn out i swiched to daton timberline ats they then i did not slide now im lifted and run on tread trights mts with no sliding its your tires but 4wd will help untill you can upgrade

Yes, the only way the KJ CRD was sold in NA was with the 242 transfer case.

Further, even in export markets there were no KJ CRD 2wds sold.(which meant an auto with the 242 or a manual with the 231)

That's just not something that I'm interested in "getting used to..."
I'll find a tire to eliminate it, or I'll eliminate the vehicle!

The Jeep is comfy, quiet & fuel efficient (27-33mpg) but fishtailing in a curve at 35-40mph (not gunning it) is no longer acceptable.

I'm thinking maybe some Firestone Destination AT's... if that won't help, I'll post it for sale on the forum.

Learn to Powerslide.....
nail the throttle - steer into the slide - accelerate out.....practice on a Motorcycle a few times and it makes the KJ easy

or get decent tires... I got rid of the Goodyears after a couple of months

I hear good things about the Destinations.

I have Destination A/Ts on my '05 and they are really excellent tires. Previous to the A/T version I had a set of Destination LE, which were also very good, but I actually think the A/T is quieter on the highway than the LE!

I do find the A/Ts get a little harsh if inflated past 34~35 PSI, but otherwise I'm very happy with them.

You definitely need better rubber under it your OEM already have 6 years? Dont care the millage they are toast, so go ahead buy FIVE news donuts.

This is a pure 4X4 with a dry(2W) a wet(Full4W)a snow/ice(Part4W) transfer case selection + a low range for very Xtreme condition, no gamick traction control and drive assist system on this one, like in the old days, It's the pilot that makes the difference :wink:
