 Post subject: CRD sputters in 4x4

I have been putting my boat in recently in 4 hi. I only put it in 4 hi when I get to the launch. it will idle there fine but when I try to give it a little throttle to pull up the launch or back in it starts to cough and sputter. but If I am pulling away from a stop light or any other situation in 2wd the jeep runs fine. any ideas?

Could the angle of the launch ramp be causing air in the fuel to show it's ugly head by making the fuel filter, the highest point in the system, even higher :?:

Yes that could be it. I should see if it does it from a flat light in 4X4. So what should I do about this?

For starters bleed your fuel head and see how much air is in there. That's the thing under the hood that has the filter mounted to it.
When was your fuel filter last changed?
The basic problem is there is air naturally in diesel fuel and that air will collect at the highest point in the system and that's the fuel head.
The CP3 pump has a purge routine built into it but it can only handle "normal" amounts of air.
With air in the fuel head it's possible the fuel heater over heated and melted the connector. You can pull the heater connector off the head and if there's fuel there then the upgraded fuel head is needed. Some recommend it as a "must do" but my original fuel head is fine at 5 years and 45k miles.
If you have a cronic problem, it does not sound like it, a lift pump is a good idea and an intank one is a good solution :POPCORN:

Best thing to do is bleed the fuel head for air and see if the problem goes away. Lots of chat on the forum but here goes again. For starters check about pg 224 of your owner's manual for the fuel head picture. Press the knob with the arrow until it gets really hard to pump; on the opposite side of the fuel head you will see a little silver bleeder screw (like the ones on brake cylinders) crack that screw open (counter clockwise) to release any air in the filter head (FYI if you put a length of clear vinyl tube on the bleeder and route it to a container you will be better able to see the air and avoid dripping diesel on things and I prefer to use a box end wrench to avoid rounding the flats); tighten the bleeder screw (snug not Godzilla); repeat until no air comes out. If it does you have started to solve your issue.

Other steps if this solves your problem. 1) If you have the 1st gen filter head, which is prone to leaking and has a bad fuel heater plug, replace it (head with filter and heater plug pigtail ca. $110 on line). 1st gen head has a smaller, comparatively, plug (it's the heater plug) on the driver's side vs. the one on the passenger side; 2n gen head both plugs are essentially the same size and the heater one in likely bright blue with a new pigtail spliced in (NOTE if you get the new assembly the pigtail wire color doesn't match the stock wires; just ignore the difference and match wire size when you attach the new pigtail). 2) consider installation of an inline or in tank lift pump, just do a forum search, (NOTE I had air in fuel problems that a new head solved but I do have an inline lift pump handy for a future install).
