Engine temp????

My temperature gauge now that fall has arrived is consistently just above the quarter mark. However, on a nice hot day recently the gauge sat at it's normal 1 mark left of center.

I know GDEs tune lowers engine temps, is this normal for other Eco tuners???

Your thermostat is failing. Come winter it will be worse :dizzy:

X2 - classic failure by opening early mode in "cool" weather. Will get to normal temp on a hot day or a day above 75F if AC is on. OEM is the only replacement unless someone takes over from Kap once he goes down under. FYI in replacing the tstat 1) a single edge razor scraper (one of those backed ones that fits in a holder) outside of the holder does very well removing the old gasket material; 2) a bit of RTV black on the engine side of the new gasket helps keep it in place during the install; and 3) there are 4 bolts (3 thru the tstat body & gasket into the block and 1 to a bracket above and in front of the tstat) but one of those bolts is almost invisible in the back lower left (looking at the tstat from the passenger tire) of the tstat. That semi-invisible bolt has the same head size as the others but is very hard to reach due to a "hump" in whatever engine part is just below it unless you use a 1/4" drive rig with a 1/4" extension (wobble extension helps). Keep track of where the bolts go as the length is different and keep track of where all the hoses go.

Man... Just did my timing belt. Oh well at least the mechanical fan should be easier to remove this time.

Don't need to remove the fan to do the thermostat!

you dont have to remove anything to replace the tstat. however, if you remove the viscous heater pump it will be much easier.

Well that's music to my ears..... I was kinda wanting to remove it anyhow and leave it off now that cooler temps are here. Havnt seen any updates from GDE on official mpg improvements.

Besides when else am I gonna get to use my 2 foot long wrench!!!!!

I removed my boost hose and moved my nonstock oil separator lines to get to the thermostat.
One tool that comes in handy is a tool used to remove and install older windshields that looks like a giant O ring pick. Run it between the hose and the hose nipple to free it up and the hoses slide right off.
If you can't find or buy one, you can use an old #1 Phillips that is worn out, heat it up and make it into the giant O ring Pick.

They also sell tools meant to do just that.

Word to the warning when replacing the thermostat.

There are a total of 4 bolts that are part of the thermostat assembly, 2 long and 2 short bolts.

Be careful not to over tighten the short bolt located at the bottom of the thermostat, because it will strip the soft aluminum threads on the block.

Make sure you are using the longest of the shorter bolts for the lower hole location.

There is a length difference between the bolt located on the very top (5/8" approx.) and the one at the lowest point (13/16" approx.).

Use the longest of the shorter bolts on the lower hole to grab as many threads as possible this minimizes the chance of stripping the threads.

If you over tighten the short bolt it can strip the soft aluminum threads in the cylinder head. So don't swap their location which is easily done due to the similar bolt size.

If you unknowingly strip the aluminum threads in the block, an undetectable leak will develop because the thermostat will not seal properly against the block. The coolant will evaporate causing an undetechatable coolant leak, possibly warping or cracking the cylinder head or casuing the head gasket to leak.
