I know this is subjective but what would be a fair price for a 2006 Liberty CRD Limited with 49,000 miles? I live in South Florida so these CRD Libertys are few and far between. Any input is welcome.

Probably somewhere in the 12-14 range, if the condition is good to match that low mileage.

You buying or selling?

I paid 13.6K this spring for a 05 sport with 43K (it was new in 06, with 27K and 26 months left on warranty)

The dealership that has this one listed is asking $16,988, which I know is way too much. I'm out of town right now, but I hope between Monday and Tuesday to drive this Liberty, a 2006 Prius, and a 2010 Jetta Sport Wagen all located in SFLA. I know, I know what everyone says about the Prius but I've never driven one and I'd at least like to drive it for myself and see what I like and don't like. Thanks for the input thus far, it's always a very difficult decision for me to make when looking for a used car.

Check the first couple characters of the VIN on the VW. If they are 3VW, it was built in Mexico. If it is WVW, it was built in Germany and brought over complete.

I like the Jeep for what I use it for, but for the mileage and solid build... VW. The VW Jetta wagons (At least the TDI when I had my 01) are German built. I had a Mexican built sedan, and it was solid for the most part... But some of the little trim glitches on the interior were annoying. Mechanically, I got 150k of FLOGGING that ride out of it without any serious concerns. The only big problems I had could directly trace to bad biodiesel (that I made myself) and cost me a fuel temp sensor ($15) and the national change-over to ULSD... Which cost me a seal internally to the injection pump, for $1200 including labor and a timing belt job.

If I ever get one again, I will do the timing belt myself, having watched and now done it myself on the Jeep. What is your intended use for the vehicle? Commuting? Hauling family / family stuff? Towing? Off roading?

Lost Addit,

Mostly commuting, about 60 miles round trip per day. I had pretty much made up my mind to focus on a Golf TDI but learned it was difficult if no impossible to use biodiesel or WVO in the 2010 and newer models. Although I don't do any serious off roading, I like the idea of having that capability if I decide to get another small boat or even a small utility trailer. I really wish some manufacture would put a good diesel in a 1/2 ton pick up truck capable of getting 30 to 35 mpg on the highway. Guess I'm asking for too much.

I use to have a car dealership in south florida. And you are in luck because my password still worked at the auction house web site. It listed 9 for sale in the past 6 months. The 2006 Limited has above average condition listed as 37k miles and $14,600. The average condition as 75k miles and $12100. All of the sports listed were starting at 85k miles. The dealership will probably not take less than $14K since they can take it to the auction house for $14K.

I also looked up Prius for 2006. 48k miles is above ave for $13700.

If you buy the Jeep and are considering WVO I can show you everything, I live in Soouth Florida. Our Jeep has 28k miles this year on grease. We are averaging $.02 to .04 cents per mile fuel costs last tank was high at .036 cents per mile. Of course I just spent $1200 on changing the timing belt. This is similar to a VW. timing belt, so that could be worse.

Good Luck

I sold my 08 Prius for my 05 Liberty CRD. Prius was a great car, bought it new and drove it 101k miles but I was ready for something:
- 30ish mpg (I drive like a Prius driver and with aired up tires and light foot, I'm averaging in 3k miles of ownership about 28mpg hand calculated 31mpg EVIC)
- 4x4 with all wheel drive
- something 'safer'. I drive 33k miles a year and was in 3 accidents in the prius. It did ok but it was unnerving and I wanted a real frame and something a little bigger
- something I enjoy working on. Prius wasnt too bad and was so reliable, everything was preventive maintenance but front wheel drive cars arent too easy to work on, IMO.
- I prefer automatic and the DSG in the VW is, IMO, a troublesome and expensive transmission to keep going. With that said, our next car will probably be a VW TDI sportswagen for my wife, but in the 6spd manual.
- something that did better mileage on the freeway with stuff on the roof/back (surfboards/bikes/kayaks). The prius was great for MPGs but not for long trips with bikes on the back or on the roof at high speed, the mileage drops to about 30 or even high twenties if enough stuff is up top/in back.

fastring,

Thanks for the input, I find myself leaning more towards the Golf TDI with the 6 speed. I would consider buying the Liberty CRD I drove yesterday IF they would sell it for 12K. I figure I'd have to put at least 2K into it to get 35 mpg on a regular basis.

Again, thanks for the input it's very helpful.

Dave

You won't see 35mpg out of a CRD unless it is hitched to another vehicle. The aerodynamics are what will kill you, and the fact that DEAD EMPTY it still is a 4500 lb brick. The engine is somewhere in the neighborhood of 500 lbs (the raw block itself is 300) so the question you have to ask yourself is... What the hell did Chrysler build the REST of the thing out of that makes it 4000 lbs heavy? My 1997 Grand Cherokee with a V8 engine is a BIGGER vehicle with twice the engine... And that is 200 lbs LIGHTER!

Mopar doesn't know how to build an efficient vehicle. Never has. The fact that these little diesels can turn 30mpg consistently with some much needed improving mods (GDE engine and trans tune) is a miracle and shows how great the engine can be. In a lighter vehicle, the economy could easily be 40+. But not in this heavy brick.

Funny, my other car is a 06 Jetta TDI. And I sold the prius then bought the Liberty. I love how my Jetta with 109K drives, when compared to the Liberty. Hated the prius...

Thanks for all the help, I'm pricing out 2011 Golf TDI's in my area now. I just glaced at an article in a Diesel ? magazine where they were talking about moding the Liberty CRD to get 40 mpg. Not sure how realistic that is and like I mentioned I'd like to start getting 40 mpg BEFORE any mods.

Thanks again,

Dave

Sorry, it was 30+ mpg in a Diesel Power article. Pretty sure you all know what they are suggesting in this article. That's why I decided not to buy the magazine.

I am glad you decided to not get the liberty. I ended up buying it this weekend for my wife.

mtnyeti97,

Which one? Everything happens for a reason. Thought I was going to get a new Golf TDI on Friday and it didn't work out. They wouldn't give me the minimum I wanted for my Honda Ridgeline. Yesterday I was looking at the VW Dealer much closer to me and found one to my liking. They are closer, by about 50 miles and I might be able to get a better price. Again, everything happens for a reason, I just don't know what it is yet. :D

Hollyweird Florida?

If (when) you get to a point of needing a good mechanic for the stuff you can't do yourself - Talk to A&S Transmission (they do everything) in Deerfield Beach. They did the full engine replacement on mine, and are now fully experienced with the CRD and its various quirks. The owner Andy is an honest guy, I've been bringing my vehicles to him for about 20 years now.
