Autozone Alternator experience

my 06 lib , alt finally failed , actually the pulley did , ( 2 weeks ago ) and I got a reman from Autozone , all was fine for 2 or 3 days and it started making a noise , but was charging fine , so I guess the new pulley failed . I let AZ know and when they tried to order a replacement , they did not have any in their system to order . I kept checking for a week and still none , so tomorrow I take it back for a refund . luckily I have extra cars

, I put it on my 05 and it made the same noise so I know it is the alt/pulley

I hope these are not going to become hard to find

They are hard to find, I called every part store around and no one could get one. Dealer wants over $500 so I went with jeepcarparts1.com. Not cheap but I do like the fact that its OEM and good for around 100,000 more miles, might need a pulley in 60k or so.. ha.

right now I see rockauto has with new clutch pulley for $304 $70 core charge

Sounds typical with autozone, they don't have enough cores in the system to keep them stocked really, ran into the same problem about 2 years ago now, keep trying, then you'll get your new one.

i had my alt pulled off and a local alt shop fixed the pulley for like 60 bucks...

This is another way to fix it. I haven;t heard of much other reason the alternator fail. I know O'Reilly's has clutches available and the tools if needed.

Are they going to give your core back, what you going to do then??

I used maniac electric motors on my 07 CRD with excellent results and when my 06 CRD alternator fails, I will use them again. They do put a new pulley on it as part of the rebuild process.

Hi, Andy! We can remanufacture the alternator for the Jeep Liberty CRD but it would take us several days to get the cores in here to rebuild. The cost for the remanufactured would be $122.00 + 30.00 core + Shipping. Of course, they would get the core value of $30 back if they send their old alternator to us.

Another option would be a new alternator. One of the suppliers we work with is showing to have new aftermarket alternators. The cost would be $255.00 + $30.00 core + shipping. Again, the core value would be refunded if they send in their old alternator.

nope , core is gone , they have to give me cash ($66) , I would rather have my old one back , but it is gone

Then just keep on pressing for a new one from autozone, you will get one sooner rather than later, and often times they can get one coming in asap from the re-manufacturer when they get a core.

was told could take upto 30 days , I cannot wait that long . Maniac motors has a New one for $229.75 plus tax , shipping , that is what I going to do , and they do not need a core on a new alt

My decoupler croaked the other day, if your in or near Salt Lake City then Snap Re-builders is your place, new decoupler installed $59. Guy there is very knowledgeable about the system and used a cheaper non standard and in his opinion better clutch. I don't know if it's true or not but I figured for that price I would give it a go.
I thought that it was interesting when my decoupler went out and the vehicle started running on battery power how each subsystem started error-ing and going off line. Reminded me of HAL slowly dying, I started singing bicycle built for two.

I got my alt in from maniac motors and it is working fine and quiet so far

My pulley on the alternator was covered in rust so I pulled it out and took it to the shop down the street. He told me it was a good thing I bought it in when I did. Once they start showing signs of rust, the clutch might lock up and damage the alternator.

He put on this pulley, part # AZ-0978

The Facet pulley is a much better design than the OE pulley. I will be replacing mine with one of these when/if it fails. Let us know how yours runs. Specifically if the belt tensioner is bouncing around a lot at idle.

At idle there is a very slight wobble at the pulley I put on, it shakes the alternator just a little bit. The tensioner pulley is rock solid , I see no vibration. I'm happy with it.

Any wobble at idle isn't good, the bolt under the alternator is NOT designed for flexing like that and can either back itself out, or do bad things and snap off entirely. Ask me how I know.

The vibration at idle can easily double in intensity when the engine is at 2500 during acceleration or 2000 at cruise on the highway, now that buzzing is beating on all the non-flexible components holding the alt down... It won't last forever that way. Sounds like you might need another pulley that is balanced better. Mine is rock-stable and so is the tensioner. It looks like the belt isn't even moving.

Geordi, You are correct. The wobble was slight at first, after less than 500 miles the pulley was toast. The Positork pulley is not a replacement.

Went back to the shop and they put on a OEM style pulley
