I've got a 2005 liberty KJ.The parking break is only working when the handle is just about vertical, even though the rear brake shoes have been adjusted. Is there a tensioner, where is it,and can it be adjusted to take out the slack in the cables,or do I need to buy new cables?
On page 5-33 of my internet manual,it says"the parking break can not be adjusted" but then on the same page it says"the cable tensioner once adjusted at the factory........"
Any help and advice would be much appreciated.
Thanks

Have a look at the KJ section on jeepforum.com, someone has recently posted the same question for a 2002 KJ.
I had a problem with my 2002 CRD from new when the parking brake would keep going slack. Every time it went for a service I asked the dealers to adjust the brake....eventualy just after I came out of warranty :x they replaced the parking brake lever mechanism inside the cab and it has worked fine since. This mechanism has a spring wrapped around it which seems to act like some form of one-way clutch and something in that area stopped working. :?

Hello Billwill,
Thanks for that information to adjust the handbrake.I've had a look on the jeepforum.com at the thread which you mentioned. It looks like there is a cheat to adjust the handbrake,so I'm going to have a go at that first.
I've had new drums and shoes fitted, but the handbrake is still only working when the lever is just about vertical.
It's a really poor design in the first place, because there should be an adjustment point somewhere down the cables(usually underneath the car)where any slack can be taken up.
Thanks again.
Cheers trickydicky

Hello again Billwill,
I've adjusted the handbrake this morning on the Cherokee, following the instructions I got from a guy in Vancouver Canada who was on jeepforum.com.There isn't an adjuster on the cables,it's a matter of cheating the mechanism to get it to work.
Thanks again for pointing me in the right direction,a bit of international cooperation South Africa,Canada, and the UK. Brill !!!!!!!!!!
