Yes, it is a real shame that this engine sounds so bad.

I've tried 2.5 inch all the way back, 3.0 inch, i've tried mid length turn outs, i've tried a hood stack. (removed hood, moved coolant pressure bottle, removed heat shield).

For the shorter length pipes the turbo was very very loud

It just sounds bad.

For me, the 3 inch straight pipe with a downturn is about as good as it gets for this engine.

OK maybe it's not bad but its not good.

At work we have 2.2L cat/Perkins 4bt's and even merc 4 cyl engiens They all sound better than our vm.

I suspect a part of the problem is the vg turbo, it spools so quickly.
But other vg engiens sound great/good.

Perhaps its the split injection?

Whatever it is it's a shame. But i'll take it. This thing makes me smile every single day.

No problems with running gutted cat for three years. It will not cause codes to be thrown. However, I did it before GDE went on record that itprovides provides no power, economy, or exhaust temp benefits.

Doc, I did not know gde did any testing in this area.

I observed real world 200 F drop on egt's. At low speed high throttle. (think climbing dunes) Ambiant temps were roughly the same, around 110f The sand dam did not change. I would push 1000f and now I sit around 800.

My results are from an uncontrolled environment.

Here in the US, people (like my brother-in-law) modify the hell out of their Cummins by doing things like...Running straight pipe, cranking up the fuel pump timing (to make it REALLY SMOKE!!) and go driving around town and go WOT next to PEDISTRIANS walking along on the sidewalks!! It's hilarious to see them jump out of the way coughing and hacking away!!

America... the freedom to screw with other people as you see fit...

On another note, I love smoking a cigarette and then blowing the smoke into peoples faces that are next to me. It is hilarious when they cough..

Your brother-in-law is one reason we don't have more diesel options in the country. And the reason for diesel emissions testing. He likes to blow smoke on people only because he can get away with it. If he did it while standing on the sidewalk himself, he would probably get his arse beat. It's just another one of those cowardly things that people in cars do because they're anonymous and they can get away - no better than yelling or throwing things out the window at people.
