Does Anybody Have A Picture Of a KJ with a tire mounted on the roof? I've been contemplating doing this but I'm not sure yet. Thanks for your pictures gtommec ! Also, can it be done with a 31" tire on a Renegade roof rack? Yes.I mounted it with red ratchet straps today just to see if it works, I will eventually change them to black. However, I wasnt able to get the bolts out of the back or those funky mounting plates off (pictured). How do you do that? Do you go from the inside, behind the trim? Or does some kind of special torx tool get them out? :banghead:

Swing gate:

How it looks so far (yes that is mud on the freshly lifted Jeep) :D :

Thanks,

No not easy plus too heavy for a flimsy Renegade rack

245/75R16 (Measures out to 30.9 inches) It wasn't really mounted per se, I just threw it on the roof and strapped it down.

Why would it be too heavy for the Renegade Rack? A 31 inch tire on a rim doesn't way 65 pounds which is the stated max load stamped on the Renegade Rack, and even that rating is only because the Renegade Rack is foremost a Roof Basket where you put the cargo on the actual roof of the Jeep (not the Rack) and they don't want people overloading and denting the roof.

I'm thinking long term use and bouncing around for months, whatever...maybe fine for short term but I wouldn't want to do it long term. Get a real basket and do it right

Gtommec, that's exactly what I was looking for. Can we see a pick of your swing gate? I love the way the renegade rack looks.

That doesn't look too bad! I think I'm going to mount a Jerry can. How did you get those bolts through the swing gate? Did you take the trim off from the inside and do it that way?

Once I took the E-Torx studs out of the tailgate I just bought some bolts that were the same thread and screwed them into the tailgate (the nuts are welded on the inside)

The correct way is to get a set of External Torx sockets and just back them out just like a normal bolt, the studs hold the black plates on. I have also seen people use vise grips but they will most likely damage the studs.

I used a regular 1/4 socket and they came right out, just start off gently.
I've done it a couple times now, and nothing is messed up.

Ah hA! I thought they may have made something like this!!! Thanks gtommec.

Sarah- I wouldn't bring a sharp object within 10 feet of my Jeep, don't worry.

infernicus- I don't see how that worked for you, but more power to ya!

heres another way to remove, take two of the nuts and install on backwards the other one the right way , ( run them back on about half way. Take two wrenches and tighten them together, now put the wrench on the nut closest to the gate and turn out. No special tools, no rounding off the ends etc

So put the first nut on backwards and the second nut on frontwards?

That's right then put your wrinch on the backwards one and back it out. The two nuts together is creating a jam nut this alows the first one to back the stud out and not unscrew off the stud.
