What exactly does it mean by replace the EGR? Does it mean replace the sensor that goes into the side of the engine or does it mean replace the Flow Control Valve?
Can either of these be cleaned or is it just best to replace them?
I have tried repeatedly to find these answers via the search but it does not seem to like EGR as a value and I find everything but the answer I am looking for.
Thanks for your help :)

See toward the bottom of viewtopic.php?f=5&t=62495 for EGR cleaning. The consensus on the FCV is that it does not serve any critical engine function. It usually fails open but if it fails partially closed or closed simply remove it; remove the butterfly to leave FCV open always; and reinstall.

The EGR is an evil device that can cause no end of bad problems to our engines, equally annoying that it was badly designed to not even have the longevity to survive more than 25k miles or so.

There are a couple options to disable its functionality, but if you absolutely want to replace it and have it functional, contact me - I have two for sale. I disabled mine on my engine the moment I bought my CRD, so it should still be perfectly functional, having never really been used.

I'm the guy that developed the FCV neutering, by pulling the device and pulling two screws to remove the big flap that can close off your intake. Diesels don't need these.

UPDATE: Well on the 8th we took a look at were the EGR and FCV were and decided if it was a project we were going to attack we would have to do it on a weekend. So while we were at it we pulled the turbo side CAC hose, the Air Intake hose and the CCV and gave them a thorough cleaning. On inspection of the CAC hose we see what might be cuts on the inside but could not feel an actual opening. Put it back on but plan to purchase a replacement. After reading about air intake hose failures at the turbo we looked to see if it was cracked but it was fine. However after looking closer we did find that the rubber point to holds the hose clamp had pulled through and had a whole. Will have to order a new air intake hose as well. So I decided to give the ORM a try and see if it had any significant effect or not. I have now been running in ORM until today and have not had a single symptom. On Sunday I ordered the GDE Eco Tune and Installed it this evening and re-connected the MAF sensor. Error codes are gone (zero) after a 5 mile test drive. Will now keep an eye on the CEL. While researching these issues I came across a thread discussing the thermostat and that if the temp was 2 or more ticks to the left of 12 o'clock then it was robbing economy. Looks like I have to replace that too.

So my next purchases will be a new CAC hose, air intake hose and thermostat.

I just wanted to say thanks to all who replied and helped guide me in the right directions in solving my issues. Thanks :)

Look in the noob guide under PSA's for the thread showing the air inlet turbo hose failure for the part number.
