We have a rarely occuring problem. Usually after having driven in fulltime 4X4 mode the front end steering or axle catches. It clunks like it is ripping off the curb but there is no curb. Usually after a couple of stops it goes away in 2 wd mode. It usually involes sharp turns. But if left in 4 wheel drive it will do it backing up under light turning. It feels like the front axle is catching.

Disengage 4x4 going in reverse with wheels straight or forward straight idling. Infact I almost never do shift on fly thing with my Nissan complete stop and start.

Our CRD's have the upscale NP242 transfer case that has full time 4x4. When you shift the transfer case lever you are not actually shifting it
When you move the lever your applying spring pressure to the shift fork(s) and when everything is aligned perfectly it engages or disengages the various modes.
I have two jeeps with this transfer case and they both act the same. The CRD just turned 48k and the 00 XJ has 156k so it's not a wear thing
Different procedures work for different folks
You'll gets lots of answers of what works for different people. Try them and see what works for you
What works for me is when going from full time 4x4 to 2 WD is to pause in "Part time" 4x4 for a few hundred feet before going into 2x4. Works for me on both of my jeeps
It also requires 4 tires the exact same size with the same air pressure

Can you tell where the noise is coming from? Does it sound like the drive shaft?

I agree with Joe that it takes a bit to unlock the 4X4 so I too pause when shifting out of full time. I'm not sure that is the problem that you're describing though. I never get noise, just wheel hop.

Do you ever get noise once you're in Full Time 4x4 or only AFTER you shift out? Do you have any problems in part time 4x4? If so, perhaps you're having a problem with the slip yoke that spins loose in Full time, but is supposed to lock up under part time.

I also have front suspension noise now that it's getting cold out. I'm not sure that my sound of rubber bushings creaking is the same as your description of "ripping off the curb." I'm not sure I know what that means.

How are your tires? I had a mixed set between front and back at one point and that prevented me from shifting in and out of 4x4 unless I was on very loose dirt.

We will try the shifting out in stages, it has the spare tire on one side that could have made it worse. It sounds like there is something jammed and it is being forsed out. Thanks for the help. Will only use 4X4 for rain days, it almost never sees dirt. Which is sad, but it is used as a commuting car. I live in S. Florida there are lots of flat roads without curves just lots of stop light and traffic. Anybody know a good offroad trail in the area?

The spare could be the problem. I remember thinking there was no way my tires were the problem when the dealership tried to get me to replace them. I assumed it was a scam. I waited about eight months before I finally got a whole new set. The rear tires had 50k and the front had 70k. I had a blowout so I bought a new tire and used the spare in the back thinking I should at least have matched tires on the same axle.

Replacing the tires fixed everything. If you have a clunk. It really could be that spare.
