I have a sport with 100k miles and 5v plugs and a limited with 74k miles and stock ceramic plugs.... I don't see any differences at start, I would put in the etno1s to the limited though when they become available.

Seeing as you live in Houston Glow Plugs are pretty much optional need for you anyways. They will probably last the life of the vehicle.

My 05 has 96K miles and all 4 original GP's work perfectly. I live in the mountains so we have probably have 4-5 months a year where GP's are needed.

My 2002 2.5 CRD still has the original glow plugs at about 95,000 miles but I live in a warm climate so the glow plugs do not do much work. :)

My 2005 just passed 150,000 miles all but one of the glow plugs are original. Only failure was around 50k. I do plug it in a lot during the winter months(Michigan), but not all the time. Of coarse now after posting how good my gp's have been, I'll probobly loose them all this winter. :banghead:

Thanks everyone for taking the poll. It is clear that there is no need to pro-actively replace the original GPs and they are lasting longer than I had orginally thought. It is also good to know that Papaindigo is working with GDE to get Etechno1 drop-in replacements for the US market. It is good to know there is a KJ CRD community out there to look to for support.

I am not sure I agree one should not be pro-active in replacements. I replaced all of mine at 99k after receiving a check engine light and confirmed faulty glow plug code at about 75k. I was able to go all spring, summer and fall with the faulty glow plug but I knew I would have trouble in winter living at high elevation.

Took it to a Jeep dealership who charged $495. A plug snapped in what was described as a "rusted" condition. Ended up having to have the head removed and machined adding $1,200 to the repair.

This experience has lead me to think that a proactive scheduled glow plug replacement program like spark plugs may be the way to go before problems develop. Also, I know that cold starting performance declined significantly well before I got a faulty glow plug code.

Also had the timing belt and water pump done by dealer. Cost: $1295.

I have 145,000 miles on my 2005, still with the original glowplugs, so far, no indication of a problem.

I have about the same mileage on my 2001 Jetta TDI, which has had all the glowplugs replaced at about 110,000 miles as a set. It also had one replaced at about 90,000 miles because the original failed, and when the second original failed, the mechanic just replaced them all.
