Hey there, new here.

My dad passed away without a will so a probate officer is selling all his possessions including his 05 liberty CRD with 53K on it. My dad bought it new, and has had it serviced at the same dealer since. The probate officer tried to get bids from several used car dealers, but only one offered him $8K for it. This is about 4K less than private party value so I thought I might offer a bit more and buy it. I called the dealer who sold and serviced it and the guy said he needed to talk to me privately. He got on another phone and said.. "Only way he would suggest buying it is if I could get a extended service warranty for it. Then later told me to walk away from it even at $4K less than private party price. He said they soot up and that soot turns to a gummy mess" I asked him if he knew anything about the GDE eco-tune kit, Provent 200, or fuel tank pump mods. "Nope"..

So what do you people think.. Should I buy it for $8K and do the mods, Or is it already half sooted up? I'm the type who drives the wheels right off his cars and I would be disappointed if it needed any major repairs before 200K. I also don't drive daily. I live close enough to work to ride the bus and it would only be driven on weekends usually.

Thanks!

One vote for "Buy it"! A 53K example for $8K is a bargain. Many people do not understand these cars. I was also told to RUN! away and that was from a Service Manager at a D/C/J/R dealer! The EGR is the biggest culprit to problems. THe GDE Eco Tune takes care of that.

Do the mods, i.e. GDE Eco Tune, EHM, CAC hoses, normal maintenance and enjoy it.

Do you do the work yourself?

Hope this helps.

Hoosier CRD

P.S. When you do get---drive it like you stole it--- you know, the Italian tune up method to get rid of some/alot of the soot in the system.

If you follow the advice of the noob guide then you ought to get lots of good useable service out of it. 8K would be a good deal.

X2 if you are mechanically inclined. Near term assuming service is uptodate and tires/battery are in good shape you need a GDE tune $450 and at 50K a serp belt (DIY for ca. $50 if not already done) then routine maintenance until 100K

I'd buy it but I already have mine and my son stoutdog has his.

FYI the 05 7/70 warranty is transferrable to a 2n owner for $150 and might have 6-10 months left. Extended warranties are not worth the $s IMHO but if you go that route be sure to get a detailed list of what's covered in writing not some vague "oh we cover the engine" promise.

I had no problems with mine and I used no klugey bypasses. The 05 was kinda lame though.

Lame?

Thanks guys. I am mechanically inclined. But I'm no diesel mechanic. Sounds like if I threw say another 1K at it, I might be ok for another 50K. Not sure another 6 months of warranty is worth it.

If I did all the mods, would it still soot up if I babied it? Or would I always have to run it hard and far (I live close to many of my destinations) to keep the cobwebs out?

A other vote for buy it!!!! I just bought my in August. I had a warrant on my till this June and i did transfer it over to me just to be safe. It did turn out to have a leaky turbo. So that did save me a lot of momey. The dealer by me only charged 125 to transfer it over. I would get it if I could because I just spent 10 on mine.

There were a few very minor electronic difference between the '05 & '06 models. The biggest difference is that the '06 has electronic traction control and rollover mitigation while the '05 had a trac-lock limited slip rear-end (not standard, it was optional). These differences reverberated throughout the electronics. Others can chime in regarding details...I just don't have the time to learn that minutia but appreciate those that have. Calling one model year over another lame is like calling one identical twin ugly. I consider it a cry for help.

Regarding whether or not you purchase: it is your choice. It is a good deal. If you do not purchase, you should share the location of the deal so that enthusiasts from the board can go purchase it. I do not consider myself a mechanic but have made it work. This site, through the help of others, has made it possible. However, if all you want is grocery getter and concrete pounder, this is not what I'd consider an ideal choice. That said, I truly enjoy driving mine.

Good luck on your choice,
Boilermaker2

It would be better to let the engine breath occasionally then having it sputter around like an asthmatic geriatric with a walker.

My Dads estate is offering it to me before a car dealer buys it for 8K. Don't know if I can offer it to anyone else.

I just talked to the dealer and mechanic who serviced it. Dealer said I could buy a 5 year 70K Chrysler full warranty for about $1700. Mechanic said it just had the turbo serviced, Oil and filters changed, Glow plugs replaced, rotors, pads, and tires replaced. Clean with no rust.

I dont think I need the warranty if I do the ORM and EHM. Why did they route soot and oil back into the intake anyway?

Sir Sam wrote:
The combination of EGR soot and CCV oil is the root cause of probably 75% of owner maintenance/ repair issues with the Jeep Liberty CRD, and those issues can be solved with a few simple actions.

What are the other 25% of issues?

It would be a grocery getter and concrete pounder mostly. But we do get some snow here in Iowa and Im planning a Colorado trip pulling a toy hauler. Plus I bet I could turn it for 10K if I really didn't like it.

Oh please buy it now they are so much fun and will run forever. They do not soot up that bad as long as use the skinny pedal every once in awhile. And the main issues are simple fuel filter head if they have not already replaced it with the latest version. Next is the torque converter which if dealer serviced then more then likely it already has the euro convertor. The only things besides those few that will possibly need to be done is the EHM to get ride of the CCV. Or what also none as those oily sooty fumes the reason they did that is because of the gooberment regulations of the time. Yes they could of thrown in another in-line filter to handle this and make the hoses last longer but this is Chrysler we are talking about. And the GDE tune is a must you will be overly pleased with any of them. And JL dont jab at the Noobs so early they tend to take it wrong.

I'd vote "buy" if you don't mind doing a little work; we have an '05. Bought it with about 29k, lost the EGR at 30k, installed an SEGR and the Dodge RAM (Cummins) in-tank fuel pump and haven't had a lick of problems (zero) since...all the way past 160k miles.

We love it (wife drive's it mostly).

I would buy it in a heartbeat. $8K is a steal. Even if it were carboned up completely, it's not that big a deal to gouge the crud out of the intake. I just had that very issue dealt with on our 2001 Jetta TDI. Got a TDI guru who does it all the time to clean it out for about $200 worth of labor. The car runs like new. The Jeep should be easier, since the intake is more easily accessible than it is on the TDI.

30 mpg? Isn't that a bit optimistic? From what I'm reading, about 20 mpg average.

Thanks again everyone. Im going to pick it up right now and test drive it. I need to make a decision by Friday.

It's not optimistic at all. I have only done the things in the noob guide and get a consistent 26mpg. My hope with the GDE tune is to get 30+mpg combined. These are great vehicles epecially if you don't mind getting your hands dirty a little bit.

Most of you "noob's" don't have your model year in your signature so I can't tell what you have

But the OP is talking about an 05 and 05's have always returned better MPG's then the 06's :jester:

This became obvious waaaay back in 2006 and there was never a definet reason why but some think its the ESP that's on the 06's

My average for mostly city driving with a heavy foot is 24 in the summer.

OK. Fixed my signature even though I dont own it yet

I just drove it 25 miles but without a EVIC, Im not sure what it's maybe getting. Slow turn over and a couple loud knocks on start-up, but it's been sitting for a few weeks and it was 20 degree's out. I did hear some intermittent ticking while it was warming up from the grill area and some rattle when I got home. Even though the dealer says its good to go, I feel I need to find another opinion here in Iowa City before I buy it. Sure is clean though..
