Thanks for the help. I got the fan off using a 6 allen wrench in the hole on the pulley and a large crescent wrench. it popped right off with the allen wrench method used here: http://www.beesvillebeefarm.com/jeep.html

I am going to tear into it this weekend and hopefully I won't find out bad news...

That is a very nice write up of the timing belt change and water pump replacement.

Well I tore into it yesterday. It appears to be in time to me. I used drill bits as locking pins and they all fit into the holes at the same time. I turned the engine a few times to make sure they were actually going into the right slots. I also opened the timing cover and no belt teeth were missing. The Timing Belt looked fine. I don't see any wires that have been damaged. i put a new camshaft sensor in and I am still getting the P0340 code after erasing it. What could be wrong with this thing??? :banghead:

I had a similar problem, after getting glow plugs and filter changed drove it jus
T out of dealership and it wouldn't start, mechanic worked on it for a long time, even got the same code for crank position sensor and that was not the problem. Turned out to be injector pump. Big job to change, dealer charged 8 hours, had pump tested, bought rebuilt for $1200. Seems to be a common pump used in other Bosch systems, found a supplier on EBay selling new pumps for $1200. But it makes sense if it doesn't start because it is not getting any fuel. Chrysler wanted $3300 for the same Bosch pump.

Is there a way I can check the injector pump? if i disconnect the hose at the fuel filter and no fuel pumps out.. is that a failed injector pump?

there are a couple used CP3 Injector pumps on ebay for around $400

also, i noticed that the fuel pump timing mark does not align when the pins are in. If the fuel pump is off by a tooth.. would that cause the engine to not start?

after looking at the fsm i found the fuel outlet line coming out of the cp3 injection pump. I was thinking about disconnecting it to see if fuel comes out during cranking. Is there a reason I should not do that? Would it mess anything up?

After talking to most of the mechanics nearby, I am convinced they don't know anything about this particular engine.

You may get quite a bit of fuel, but it shouldn't otherwise mess things up; I'd put a rubber hose over the outlet and feed it into a container...

Also, the ECM may shut things down when it fails to sense a normal rise in pressure and declares a fuel leak (etc) - just guessing here.

Just be careful to avoid personal injury.

I removed the metal hose coming out of the fuel pump, turned the key, and fuel pumped out.. I am out of guesses. Anybody got any ideas?

The fuel pump did not pump out a huge amount of fuel just kind of ran out slowly.

I'm going to keep updating this post in case anyone else has the same problem. I think i was so close to solving it on my own. The last thing I did was disconnect the fuel line to the injectors and turn the key. When I did so a small amount of fuel pumped out. The mechanic said that there should be something like 50 pounds of pressure so it should shoot out of there much faster than it is. So it appears to be the injection pump or the fuel filter is clogged. The belt/tensioner seems to have nothing to do with it. I put some fuel treatment (CRC diesel injector cleaner with anti-gel) into my system about 3 miles before it shut off. It looks like that was the source of the problem. When the engine shut off it just threw the belt off.

It also probably doesnt help that it's been 45k miles since I changed the fuel filter.

I'm hoping a new filter will fix it :|

Well that fuel filter is 20-25k overdue for changing at least. Do you have the 1s or 2n gen fuel filter head? If you have the 1s gen it needs replacing. A new 2n gen plus the wiring pigtail is like $125 and comes with a new filter and WIF sensor installed.

How do I tell if it's 1st or second? It's stock 2005 so i assume it's the 1st? I've read about them overheating and all that but mine never has. It looks like it's made of metal not plastic.

also will this cp3 fit a liberty? http://www.ebay.com/itm/DODGE-RAM-2500- ... 4cfcd42bc9

It looks just like this one: http://www.ebay.com/itm/JEEP-LIBERTY-2- ... 45f6b38931

See fuel head bleeding video on Sir Sam's NOOB guide for difference. I would not waste energy on looking a injector pumps until you have delt with an almost certainly plugged up fuel filter

I have the second gen fuel head. I think I checked a few years ago when i found this site. My fuel performance was fine before the engine just shut off that is why I did not think it was a clogged filter. I also went 85k before changing the original filter. I changed it when I found this site. i guess the fuel treatment caused it to clog?

the fuel treatment disloged old built up crud and dirt from the tank and sent it flowing into the fuel filter. If the cleaning caused that much of an effect on the system, you will need to do it several times over again and replace the filter again.

My mechanic seems to think the injection pump is out because he primes the (old) filter.. tries to start.. and it loses pressure. Is that just typical of a clogged filter or does he have a point?

He called the stealership and they of course said bring it in. it will have to be replaced.. and that motor is electronically timed so we will have to do it. Dealership said $4500 for parts and labor... WOW!!! :dizzy:

The new filter will be there in the morning.. I sure hope it works

If not I will prob attempt to change the pump.. Do I have to have the special tool to get it off? anyone ever taken one off?

What is loosing pressure?
I'm not sure that you need a new CP3 pump yet. But if you do, you will need to rent the tools required for the timing belt job and the tool for the injection pump pulley. I have done it and I can offer some helpful tips to make it a less frustrating job.
You do not need to evacuate the air conditioning system as the FSM tells you to.
If needed you can buy a rebuilt pump by Bosch for a little over $800.00
http://www.ebay.com/itm/300491704625?ss ... 841wt_1185
Yikes, make that $950.00, they just went up over $130.00 since December. :dizzy:

It's an 8 hour job to re and re the injector pump, I just had it done. They wanted $3300 for a new pump from Chrysler, it is just a common Bosch pump. We were not 100% sure it was the pump so we had it tested from a local shop, that cost $150 and it tested bad. We bought a rebuilt pump from the same shop for $1200. Later I found a source for brand new Bosch pumps for $1200. If the pump tested good I would still have been on the hook for the labour. I had the timing belt done at the same time because it was all apart anyway so it just cost parts. The mechanic at the Chrysler dealer said he needed some special tools to do the job. I paid flat rate for everything and I am sure it took longer. Jeep runs very well now, before it was blowing a lot of black smoke on acceleration, now very little. Funny all my problems started after changing fuel filter and glow plugs.
