I have a humming noise from the front left tire that wasnt solved by a new wheel bearing. The upper ball joint is new with the control arm. The lower ball joint was changed under warranty and is good. The tie rod end is good. I just had an alignment done as well. The tires are new and were balanced with a Hunter roadforce. The noise is on the front left wheel and goes away when i turn left, which led me to believe it was the hub. It starts at about 20 mph and gets louder as i go faster. Could this be a bad CV axle?

Brake rotor or caliper?

My 02 eats front rotors. I've tried some premium ones too but still only last about 6 months and they have to be turned.

Not the rotors. They have less than 5k on them. They are smooth and straight.

I would rotate the two tires first, I had new tires and was chasing a noise for a long time and it was the one tire, The intermediate shaft is on the pass. side and would make a different noise.

Mine has a really bad hum as well. Intermediate shaft is on order and should be here soon. New rotors on the front and rear, wheel bearing and ball joints all look good. Weird that so many have gone bad all at the same time. Mine went from absolutely quiet to really annoying hum with a few days

I wish. I was driving to NAPA for a reman CV and the car was all over the road. I picked it up and went back home and started tearing it down. The new hub that the mechanic put in was never torqued down, so the bolts were coming loose. I tightened everything up and went for a drive...still humming. So the new hub (now properly installed) didn't fix the problem. I tore it all down again and installed the reman CV from napa. When i got the hub back on, the CV was binding up on the top of the ball joint and also within itself. i couldn't turn the rotor at all. I ripped it all back down and compared the NAPA CV to the stock one i removed, and the new was about 3 inches longer. This was part number 95-8483. I put the stock unit back in and went to NAPA. They believe it was boxed improperly and they ordered another one in to compare. I haven't been able to get out to NAPA yet. I leave for work before they open and come home after they close. Hopefully i can get out there this weekend and pick it up. The noise is getting louder every day and its starting to get low vibrations as well.

That CV you got was boxed wrong, they gave you the gasser CV. The CRDs driver side CV joint is shorter then the gassers.

I checked your part # on the napa website and it said it was for the crd. My guess would be that they just threw the gasser CV in there thinking it would fit.

If you look on the Napa website, the part number he posts above gives a shorter length measurement than the other Napa remaneded driver side CV joint on the site. I believe he has the correct part number, but it has been boxed wrong, unless of course the websites descriptions are wrong.

Well, did you find out what the cause was. I am still chasing down the hum/ vibration. Intermediate shaft and the half shaft were fine but the problem still persists. Seems worse when I let off the gas versus when I am accelerating or cruising.

NAPA ordered another reman unit, and it cam in exactly like the one that was binding up. They just gave me a refund and suggested i order one from a dealer. I am going to order one up from the NAPA by my office. Im hoping this location pulls inventory from a different warehouse and will provide a shorter unit.
