Thanks! Looks simple enough to do. I was concerned that there were no drains on this thing. That radiator drain should be easy enough to get to, right? The coolant looks good. It looks to be orange, but clear (at least through the tank it does). It has 63K, but who knows when or if it has ever been changed. My guess is no. Do you happen to know the capacity of a drain and refill?

Well, "yes, it's diesel"...

All I have to say is: BRILLIANT!!! :BINGO:

I installed this thermostat today and it works like a charm! Thanks for this thread.

It is 25 degrees F as I write here in central Indiana. After the install, I drove down the highway at 65MPH. Temp needle got right up to the middle and stayed there.

BTW, the drain for me was pretty tough to get to, IMO. I used a 5/8 crows foot in my hand and went at it from the top. Hope this helps.

If you follow all the links of all of my linked posts, see link posted above, there is one to Squeeto's 10mm drain tool which is great. Access may or may not be easy from the bottom, it varies a bit between vehicles depending on exactly how a couple of things are routed, but if bottom access is not possible pull the air filter box. To do so pop the air box to turbo hose (CRITICAL note on reinstall be sure that hose and it's clamp are fully on the air filter box outlet before clamping lest you crush the outlet - yes I know); pop the lid and remove sensor plugs to get lid out of the way; the bottom is "pined" much like the engine cover and takes a bit of pulling up to remove (I found reaching under it in the back was the best way to get it started and if any of the mounting grommets come out with the unit put them back prior to reinstall; a bit of grease helps reinstall). This gives you fairly easy access to the drain from the top. I recommend a racheting box end wrench on the 10mm tool.

The FSM and owners manuals are inconsistent on capacity and I think it's because they botched the conversion from liters to quarts so I'd go with a system refill using 1.6 gallons of undiluted antifreeze to get to a 50/50 mix. Be sure to use only HOAT coolant (Xerex G-05, Mopar, or the Motorcraft Premium Gold - I go with Xerex available from NAPA). On refill close the bottom drain; pour the antifreeeze into the plastic radiator top tank on the firewall; top off with demineralized water (grocery store purchase in 1 gal containers - not "bottled" drinking water) until fluid starts to come out of the vent cap on top passenger side of radiator then close that vent and continue to fill until just above the mid-point of that plastic tank; do a couple of drive cycles to full operating temp and full cool down and add water to the plastic tank if need be as air vents from the system.

I got the thermostat in. It took under 10 minutes and using my handy hose pinching pliers, I lost about a cup of coolant at most. Needle is just short of 1/2, and all is well. I test drove it about 7 miles, floored up up hills, with and w/o 4wd on (6 inches of snow here), and no spikes. Hopefully this will fix her 21mpg dilemma, haha. :JEEPIN:

I just put in the Stant 192 degree thermostat and it works great. My gauge was at about 1/4 before and now it is straight up. I have not went through a tank of gas yet but my EVIC is showing a significant increase in mileage so far.

Just called my supplier here in Montreal and he cross referenced a GATES 33109 as the same thermostat as the Stant. $15 CDN. I will have it Friday or Saturday and report back.

Installed mine yesterday. Install was a breeze took 5 mins. Only recommendation I would have is warm up the engine a bit to soften the hose. Mine was cold and a bit hard to push the thermo into. PUT the clamp, it will move if you dont, ask me how I know :banghead: There was already a VERY small hole in mine that was barly visible, I drilled it out to 1/32''
Will post results in a few days. So far no change in indicated temp on gauge. I think my thermostat was working ok and the cold weather is preventing the engine from heating up to operating temp. I also read on GDE site that the tune also lowers the temps to around 170*F due to reduced fueling. Mine seems to hover around 170* and has never gone above 176*
Will see what happens when weather warms up.....

Mine is staying a constant needle width left of dead center now and takes a mere 2-3 miles to reach full operating temp.

Radman if your temp gauge was reading vertical or 1 needle width or so left of vertical then your OEM tstat was working fine in which case you may not see a lot of change.

Mine was and still is reading slightly below one tick to the left. In between the next tick. This was my last hope as to why I cannot get over 23 MPG with this Jeep. Even on hwy in summer with stock wheels, suspension, ECO tune and trans tune. New brake calipers, filters, fluids etc... I average 18 MPG most of the time. Note this is mostly city driving.

that's not too far out of the range of normal for city driving. Have you taken it on a long trip yet with mainly highway? Even if it's only a couple hundred miles, fill up, drive. Fill up again and calculate your mileage.

Last weekend, I got 29mpg on mostly highway. I have only done what is recommended in the noob guide. :)

to beat 23 MPG - drive hwy summer - slowly - 60-65mph - keeps the engine 1800-2000 rpm

(I can't drive slow here - I'll get run over - but the one time I did in Utah - I hit 29mpg)

Just bought a crd a couple weeks ago and one of the first things I noticed was that the temp gauge only came up to 1/4. So I ordered the 195 Stant.

This was my first crd project and I am definitely not a mechanic. When I took the hose off like other said I lost about a cup of fluid, all of it ran down over the pulley and belt right underneath the thermostat. When I started it up after the operation, that pulley/belt made an awful screeching noise for +- 5 seconds and then stopped, making noise and appeared to function normally. I'm assuming from my limited (read none) knowledge that the fluid made the belt slip on the pulley for a time and then it caught. Anyone else notice this/anything I need to or should do?

Other than that, the needle comes right up to 1/2 and stayed there through a couple mile test drive. Seems like a great fix. Thanks everybody for the help, this place is a great resource.

Maiettan - short version 1) yes and 2) not really although dried antifreeze can be "sticky" so you on a cold engine you might want to lightly rinse the spill area or not with like a watering can or cup of water.

Thanks for the reassurance. Makes a slight squeak now from that area, but I can't really be sure it didn't make that before. Anyway, I'll try pouring some water on it at some point when it warms up here a bit.

Drove to work and temp gauge stayed straight up... Another satisfied customer, so far.

I poured a bucked of water over mine when I was done. Mine had time to dry as I did not use the Jeep that day.
On warmer days my temp gauge is reading almost half way. Definateley up from where it used to be. Will report back mileage once I get through a full tank.

Just ordered mine yesterday, (Stant 195) from Amazon. I have been at two bars left of center and my heat seems to be lacking.

Got it in and took it for a test drive. The temp is now just to the left of 1/2. I did drill out the stock hole to 3/32' 1/8 seemed too large and the stock hole looked just a hair small.
