Where are you located? Stay away from dealers unless they have done a CRD timing belt successfully. One local dealer here in PA comes to mind. They screwed up my friends timing belt, TWICE in a row. Its still there waiting on yet another set of rockers

I'd read everything you can find on it. To do it properly, you need various locking pins/tools and a computer. You can get the timing in the ball park by the mark & pray method, but to get it right, you need that computer. If you screw up the timing by even a little, if your efforts to lock the cams and crank at the perfect place go even a little bit aglee, you are looking at major engine damage. The job does not require a rocket scientist, just someone willing to do it by the book with the requisite tools. Since you only need those tools every 100,000 miles, and since many have no other purpose, renting makes a lot of sense.

I am doing the timing belt on my '05 Limited now.

I have done timing belts/gears before and agree that a computer is not necessary.

The hardest part is getting access to the engine. two hours in and I still have to remove the radiator(s).

It would be helpful to have someone post a guide on removing the fan shroud, radiator, etc.

There are some bolts that I cannot find, and I do not want to screw up those plastic parts!

You do not repeat do not have to remove the radiator to do this job. All you have to do is remove the fan and fan shroud. The fan shroud is held in place by 2 very short (don't lose these as length is critical - install too long a bolt and you punch holes in your radiator) bolts that screw into lightly retained nuts (don't lose these - they fall out easily and a bit of hot glue work will prevent that from happening in the future) about 1/2 way down on each side and slip in retention tabs at the bottom. Undo those bolts and clip the wire ties that hold things to the standoff mounts on top of the shroud. Next undo the fan which requires 1) a 36mm wrench or adjustable wrench that will handle that size and 2) something to keep the fan from turning like another person with a long screw drive wedged down in there or see the allen wrench trick picture part way down http://www.beesvillebeefarm.com/jeep.html . Once the fan is loose put a towel or piece of cardboard between it and the radiator, to prevent radiator damage; complete unscrewing the fan; and remove the fan and shroud together. As I recall the shroud may need a slight tilt toward the driver side to remove.

If you feel you just have to remove the radiator see http://colorado4wheel.com/content/KJ_TB.html

PS while you have the fan out give serious consideration to replacing the junky OEM fan clutch with a Hayden severe duty clutch. IIRC cost is like $50 and it cuts in earlier in the heat rise cycle than the OEM fan so it stops overheating sooner.

Thanks for the quick reply.

So you are saying that I have to bust that big nut on the fan idler and take the fan and shroud out together?

How do I immobilize the fan idler?

Wow, twice? Maybe the guy is using the marks on the cam sprockets to line it up...

Yep. I would think they can read the FSM and have tools since they are a dealer... Oh, wait... Nevermind...
