I have been finding myself wishing I had full-time 4wd available to me more and more. Quite often I have to deal with extremely icy highways that switch from dry to ice covered, half ice covered, to not even being able to tell what the road condition is until it is too late. I also have one paticularly bad highway on the way to work that always has a howling North wind blowing across it, polishing the highway and blowing me around like a sailboat. I don't like leaving it in part time 4wd drive, especially at highway speeds with it changing from ice to dry so frequently.

Is it as simple as swapping in the selec-trac transfer case and shift lever assembly into my '06 KJ with command-trac? Or do I need PCM and electronics garbage as well? Anyone ever try it?

Thanks for the responses!

I don't think it is that simple. You are going to need a TCM(transmission control module)
If that is true, you might find it cheaper to buy a vehicle that already has it.

there's threads on here about this.
I know I'm stuffed as i have a stick shift, and that'll apparently lunch up the 242 pretty good.

If you have and automatic you should be fine. The only sensor the Selec-Trac has really is the position sensor. There are no speed sensors or anything else to really mess with it is mostly mechanical linkage problems to work out. I am working on a transfer case swap myself waving good bye to my Selec-Trac and hello to something a little more off road worthy. Plus a lot lower range doesn't hurt

Wanna trade? I have a 242 with a brand new Chain in it, and have no use for the Full time selector. The rear drive shaft slip yoke is different between the 2 cases for sure too, as the 242J in the Libby has a massive 32 spline shaft while the 231 uses the smaller standard 27 spline output. There is possibly a slight difference in drive shaft length to as the 242 is a physically much larger case than the 231 but I'm not sure there.

Out in New Brunswick I see you're in Winterpeg lol, you'd have to source another drive shaft like I said tho as I'm currently running a S-10 shaft and a slightly modified T-case end yoke that works with my lift height that won't work with the stock or even small lift setup.
