Transmission wind up!!

Hey all, brilliant site, learnt a lot already since joining the other day and getting an 05' 2.8CRD (Manual)

Slowly getting to know the Jeep, but it came without an owners handbook or manual, so trial and error :oops:

(still havent worked out how to get past the big plastic thing over the spare wheel on the rear door :oops:

)

I've had a couple of off-roaders in the past (one being a prepped XJ which was brill :mrgreen:

), and were all used regularly off road ... the new one is going to be the family drive + a bit of trail driving.

I desided to try the part time 4wd today on the road as it has probably never been used before looking at it underneath etc ..... drove fine in a straight line, but I could feel it all stiffening up when I tried to turn a tight corner slowly!! ... I seem to remember something about doeing a figure of eight a few times in 4wd on gravel or similar loose surface to loosen it up I think :?:

.. is this right ?? (never had it before with the other trucks always being used for froadin!)

Any advice appreciated :wink:

Welcome to LOST! Owners manuals can be downloaded as a pdf from chrysler's website.
You're not supposed to use part time 4wd (np242 transfer case) on grippy road surfaces. It tightening up is normal around turns. Its the drivetrain binding up. You are lucky you didn't break anything.

... my last 4x4 was a lifted Mitsibushi Shogun which has "Super Select 4WD" which can be run in "4-Hi" on road ... doh!

Luckily I felt it pretty quick, and nocked it straight into 2WD straight away ..... nutha lesson learned :shock:

The "full-time 4wd" mode is similar to what you had on your Mitsu (front diff, rear diff, and center diff allowing all the wheels to turn at different rates). the only difference between that and part-time 4wd is that the center diff is locked. I drive my CRD in full-time FWD all the time (except when I'm off-roading

Confused !!

There is 2Hi - 4Hi - N - 4Lo

I put it in 4Hi .. and it say's "part time" on the dash ????

Sounds like you have a part time only transfer case. You need to leave it in 2Hi unless on a low traction surface. If you use 4Hi on dry pavement you run the risk of driveshaft binding and breaking something. Up side is slightly better gas mileage.

Hmmmm

.. so whats the differance between 4Hi and 4Lo ? .. I'm guessin just the Hi/Lo range, but both have the center diff locked !? does that sound about right do ya think ?

4Lo is for low gearing. It multiples the torque reaching each wheel for exceptionally poor traction surfaces our for things like rock crawling. I think the ratio is 2.70:1 or something around that. And yes, both are locked in the center.

2HI in any conditions

N when you need to tow it
4LO when you need extra control and 4WD

... just gotta work out the best way to lift it now :shock:

, been reading in the other threads but there's so many opinions on differant kits etc, and there isnt stuff for the KJ in every 4X4 shop over here

... I think the OE front suspension is a bit "saggy" and tired to start with so thinking the Daystar kit may not be the one for me :ALONE:

Indeed. My bad on the full-time thing. The US-spec CRDs all have the 545RFE dodge truck automatic transmissions and the NP242 transfer case (with the extra "full-time" center-diff mode as referred to as "selec-trac"): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jeep_four-wheel-drive_systems

Congrats on the new jeep.

I just got mine and people here have been helping me figure out how to lift mine. Seems like you really don't need a kit and can save some money.

Tommudd helped me figure out the parts I need in this thread. Hope it helps. JBA has all of them, though I am sure you can find them other places to. If you do go this route and find them cheaper be sure to send me a PM.

Also, Tom pointed out in another post that the Daystar lift will still require longer rear shocks and that its only a couple hundred less then the parts in the link I posted above.
