I know Oil topics usually go south and have been discussed plenty-o-times.

But

My Oil came out pitch black yesterday when I had the change done, and I'm wondering if the filter isn't able to go as long as I'm asking it. Here's the specs:

Castrol Edge Syntec 5W-20
Wix/Napa filter
5,000 mile interval

Should I change up anything? Any recommendations on a different filter? Should I stock up on Mopar? (because the owners manual recommends 7,500 mile intervals, so their filter should be able to handle it.

Upon further research, turns out most Mopar filters are made by Purolator. The smaller ones (which we don't use) are made by Wix.

So perhaps I'll try a Purolator next time. Or perhaps someone makes a longer filter that'll fit.

One thing I'm not going to do is bump up my OCI. 5,000 is a completely reasonable length for full synthetic. Particularly when the manual says 7,500 is ok for regular mineral oil. The jeep liberty iPhone app says 8,000 for christ sake.

Idk. Any thoughts are welcome at this point.

I use Amsoil without a problem. Change them every 7,000. They're expensive though, I get a great deal on them so it's not too bad.

Mobil 1 all the way! You buy cheap you get cheap quality.

I use Mobil 1 5-20 and a Mobil 1 oil filter and go 10/12K in between oil changes. My oil has never come out pitch black.

That's the thing though. Castrol Edge Syntec is like $35+ for 5 quarts. It's not crap, and my mechanics swear by it.

No. Mine chimes in completely randomly. A little while back, I had the change done @ 10k. At 11,200 the chime came in . . .

I just ignore and reset it

I go by the chime and idiot light too lol. It's usually around 4k miles, I actually started setting my trip B for my oil changes. I think I'm around 3500 or so, maybe 4k.

Mine goes off after 3k too. I do the same, ignore it.

Mobile 1 is really no longer the best....
Pennzoil ULTRA or Castrol EDGE Titanium are considerably better per the oil analysis nerds at BOBISTHEOILGUY.com

I buy either of those for $27.57 in the 5 quart jugs at wallyworld along with an OEM filter (the big one)....just ask your parts guy for a price break on buying a case or half case.

I use full synthetic oil 5W20 either Mobil 1 or Penzoil Ultra, the Amsoil is garbage. I used amsoil for 2 oil changes and no matter how light I was on the gas pedal could never do better then 80 miles on 1/4 tank. Switched to Penzoil and in the first week went 92. Furthermore, if you order from Amsoil directly, they will try and rope you in their membership club, in which you have to pay a yearly fee - be careful.

As far as oil filters, not keen on Mopar or Fram, I use Purlator Pure1, Mobil1 or Wix.

Just a side note, I know Chrysler says the bio coolant can last like 10 years 100K , I am changing mine this year and every year thereafter and make sure you use distilled water.
