2002 Australian import just ticked over 190k km.
Owned from 172k km. Replaced clutch and 4WD light switch, about to do timing belt.

Thought i would start this to get an idea how many 2.5s are still going.

The 2.5 CRDs only went to areas outside of the USA such as Europe, Australia and South Africa.
I think we were actually fortunate in getting these first models as once Chrysler introduced CRDs to the USA they totally cut back on quality control and fitted the cheapest components possible.

The 2.5 CRDs have the better fuel head that everyone else is trying to buy, a better Turbo/EGR system, a better intake to the air filter, window motors that work and and rear control arms that do not corrode and need replacing.

I have had my 2002 2.5 CRD Sport manual for almost exactly 10 years now and done about 100,000 miles with virtually no problems at all. I do not do much mileage these days and save the Jeep for trips into the nearby Game Park mainly.

What I do miss on my 2002 model is lack of disk brakes at the rear which come out in 2003 and ABS braking (Limited models only in 2002) and I would love to have the extra power and torque that the newer 2.8 CRDs with their variable-vane turbos have.

Tonycrd here on the forum is the expert on the 2.5 CRDs as he has a Spanish version :D

G'day Billwill

I thought that might be the case. I have only had mine for over 12 months, and cant seem to find that many problems with them, not like the 2.8s seem to be having.

There's a large world wide community of 2.5 CRDs out there that visit LostJeeps, Let us know how your going.

Regards
Peter

Peter,
I also have a CRD 2.5. My model is a 2003 Sport (built Oct 2002) has disks at the back & ABS. My current milage is 95K mls (owend from 54K mls). No major problem to report except the syncros in the gearbox sort of seasing between 2 & 3 gear, been fixed but never still quite right.
I love mine and would part with it. Yes I do wish I had a bit more power but I am happy with what I have got and maybe a smoother 6 speed gearbox.
CRD 2.5 are very common in Europe and you can find the last ones registered up to 2005 (old stock as 2.8 was available from late 2003 here in the UK)
Fil.

G'day Pippobug
Good to hear from you.
Wish i had disk in the back. My gearbox still feels nice and notchy, had some dramas getting a clutch but all good now. Is yours solid or Dual Mass.
I just fitted a lift pump/filter system, while i was waiting for the pump i fitted a snorkel.

Regards
Peter

Hi,
I think my clutch is a Dual mass one ( at least that is what my mechanic said). The gearbox tend to be tempremental in cold morning more that other times. I am sure you could retro fit disc to you rear axel, I supposed you need to find parts and all.

Thanks Pippobug, I'll look into doing it soon as rear shoes need replacing.

Just got back from camping trip 870Km, three different camps. New air/fuel filter system working great, different car to drive and better mileage.

I was told by jeep service that my 02 by the vin had solid fw, found out on the hoist it was dual. Already purchased clutch kit to suit solid fw.
Rang Jeep service to check if spring clutch plate OK to use instead of the solid disc, couldn't answer. So i bit the bullet at fitted, gear changes are much smoother now as i have more springs to soak up the backlash. That was 6 months ago, no problems.

Regards
Peter

Hiya Petah. As was said already, closer to you is AJOR, http://www.ausjeepoffroad.com/forum/vbindex.php and I think it was Cmohr who swapped (or at least tried) the brakes and the ABS system from his 3.7 to a 2.5 CRD.

Anyway, welcome to Lost, mine is a 2001, one of the first ever made. 180k Km's. Other then the T-stat I never did any work on the engine but regular maintanence.

The US CRD's have a bunch of troubles because of the poor fuel quality. Or at least that's what I am thinking.

There seems to be a worldwide shortage on clutchplates....that it now has springs is another mystery. Hopefully the Bi-mass will last longer with the new clutch plate.

I have a Fleebay powerchip that ups the low rev power of the 2.5 a bit, but don't expect miracles.

>>>Fil, do you have the correct type of oil in the gearbox? If some joker has filled it with 75W90 it starts to shift difficult.

Tony,
I sure do hope so as it was changed about a year ago from Jeep Main Dealer when they rebuilt the Gearbox when the Syncross went. It's still sticks when cold between 1st and 2nd gear. I can live with it for now. When the gearbox goes then either it get fixed under warrenty ( I have life time warranty on the KJ from the dealer) or I will look to find a 6 spd and get it fitted ( should be better in the long run).

What temp do you call cold.
I only get down to about +9deg C at worst in winter.
I tend to agree with Tony, might be about the oil. I have heard of doggy things being done by even the best of shops.

G'day TonyCRD
I'm a noob member of Ausjeepoffroad as well. Great Australian content but lacking 2.5 content. Just noticing more of an international content here. Would be great to have a 2.5Lt CRD section on each site.
I have to do a lot of reading, and time is precious to glean out the bits of interest. That's why i started this thread.

I fitted the same Italian Fleebay powerchip that you have...it did up the power a bit but within about 300km of usage it went "bang" on the open road and I ground to a halt. I removed the powerchip and have been stock standard since. It was not worth the hassle of sending the powerchip back for a replacement/refund and in any case it did increase the usage of diesel. :?

Peter
here we get as low as -6C ( we have -14C this year but it's a one off), I am in Cambridge UK, Well I trust enough the Jeep dealer to have put back in the correct oil as I have been a real pain to them over the last 3 yr for them no to mess me around with the gearbox. I don't understand it it's only when it's cold in the summer it's fine same once the greabox has warmed up.. We will see as I said if it goes it's under warrenty.

Tony is that the only oil you have used.
Any thing else that's compatible.
I have read somewhere about wrong oil being used to top up and causing foaming.
I think this may have happened to me when i had the clutch fitted i think 4 about months ago, just noticing it now. a bit of oil coming down from the top of the gearbox. Is there a spot on top that could vent out some oil. I haven't had a good look to see if it's the vent pipe.

Fil you say "it's only when it's cold in the summer it's fine"
That seems to suggest it might be wrong oil. Too thick.

Yeah petah, there are other products that you can use, here is a list:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Ventur ... ubrication

Are you sure it's not leaking from the inputshaft? Mine did..due to the air produced by the flywheel the oil get's 'thrown' all over the place.

Image

The 'foaming' you refer to..I think that's for automatics. It's almost impossible for oil to come out of the breather, unless you fill the gearbox to the top instead of the 2 litres it needs.

BTW, if anyone needs it: how to change the clutch on a kj
