WARNING: Cutting of under dash involved
What I'm working with. Left window mount is for 7" Android Tablet, right is for GPS.(Yes that is a Chewie doll, he is my copilot)
Image
Its important to have a good supply of wire connectors lying around for such an occasion
Image
I chose the Polk Audio db351
Image
The stock speakers are about 2" and are tiny as heck but I bet w/o them there would be no highs. They are def a joke next to the new Polks.
Image
Image
Most people have said that 3.5" do not fit in the dash and technically they don't. Some modifying is necessary.
Image
To take apart the dash I used Diggers previous thread. viewtopic.php?f=104&t=29455
There is not a lot of room between the dash and window at the top so a small ratchet is probably a good idea.
Image
After the speakers were removed a little brainstorming was necessary.
Image
After seeing that the Polks were going to stick out too much I decided to try and cram them underneath
Image
I had cut around the top to check for clearance and ensure there was enough. I used the stock screws in the back because the head is a little larger then the supplied screws. I pointing where I chose to put the new hole and screw
Image
On the front I used the new screw and stock retainer with a new retainer below the speaker to keep it all tight.
Image
Image
The drivers side was pretty easy and not too terribly tight. Everything hooked up fine and sounds good there. On to the passenger side.
The glove box has a tab on each side that releases it to hang down freely. The top dash piece just pulls up.
Now the tricky part where I didnt get any pics, The air bag needs to be removed for clearance to the air vent area. There are two 13mm nuts on the underside above the glove box. On the top you need to remove the two bolts (13mm) attached to the body, then everything will just wiggle free. Everything else as far as installation remains the same, but there is a lot less clearance for moving around.
Image
I had to go in the house real quick and left my phone inside when I came back, which was my camera.
The only issues that should arise are clearance trying to get both sides of the airvent on but be patient and wiggle it back in.
With everything back in the volume at 15 sounds like it did at 20 before and it is much clearer.
As mentioned in a previous thread the output on the stock radio probably can not with stand this for very long but I have a 4ch amp to hopefully add soon and will only have these 2 speakers powered by the radio. I may also add 2 more and another 4ch amp if I can find the right place for everything. I like my music loud and to be able to hear the song not just the THUMP THUMP.

If you have any questions or comments please feel free to post them. I can answer anything dealing with my experiences and anything else I will try to find the answer.

And a teaser of things to come.

I was just curious if you ended up putting in a 4 channel amp, and if so, where did you put/mount it? I just bought my KK a few months back and have an entirely new system on order. I am also looking into replacing my dash speakers with 3.5" and running those off of the aftermarket head unit which will give those enough RMS power so they will sound nice while running the 4 doors and sub off of the 5 channel amp I purchased. It certainly would be nice to mount it under a seat or in the cargo bin in the back but I am not sure if the amp would fit in either one of those places. How have the 3.5" speakers held up with the mounting you did? And I couldn't get a full look at it in the photos, but did you have to remove a decent chunk of the dash in order to get them to fit? I would really appreciate a little heads up because I should be getting everything this week and will be installing this weekend. I will post photos once I get everything set up. Thanks in advance!

I have since installed a LC6i line out, 4ch amp, and 4 new door speakers. I havent wired the dash speakers back yet. I did trim a decent chunk out of the dash but its mainly so the speakers are not blocked by the dash. If I did it again I might consider doing some one inch tweeters with speaker adapters that are sold online. I also kept the oem head unit to retain bluetooth and steering wheel controls. 4 ch amp was mounted to the rear seat on the drivers side.

Thanks much for the response. I have the component tweeters with my door speakers so I'll probably just use those instead. I appreciate the advice.
