 Post subject: Advice on CEL codes P0069 and P0101

I've got a 2006 CRD with 86K miles. I run the EHM and had the new glow plug kit installed last August. I have an early SEGR unit but haven't installed it yet. Original fuel filter head and EGR. Water pump replaced last November. Used to run the ORM but haven't in a long time. Usually drive with Scan Gauge II connected (didn't see the comments about this being a bad idea until just now.)

I'd really appreciate your advice on diagnosing codes P0069 and P0101 on my CRD. Here's the background...

This past winter when I was in New Jersey, I had some intermittent issues with hard starting. I first noticed it around October, after the glow plug replacement and before the water pump. I changed the fuel filter which seemed to help for a while but didn't really solve it until warm weather came. Then in March when I was in a hurry and driving around a bit more spirited than usual, the CRD threw a CEL with codes P0069 and P0101 for the first time. I have always cleaned the MAP with every oil change, and I tried cleaning the MAP again. However, when I clear the codes they always eventually return.

I'm now in Dallas, TX and I've noticed a few things:
- If I don't run the A/C and drive lightly the codes take longer to appear; sometimes I can drive around for a day or two with no code. But I've never been able to go longer than that.
- The P0069 code is the most frequent one to appear, and P0101 eventually shows up too.
- Most often the P0069 code will appear when I'm stopped at a stop light; this can be especially annoying because a few times it will cause the CRD to go into limp mode until I clear the code. (It seems like limp mode has only happened when accelerating from a stop, when it's hot out and with the A/C on.)
- This afternoon I was parked on an incline with the front higher than the rear, and I experienced the same hard starting issue I had in NJ (my driveway there was on a slight incline). After the hard start, the CRD immediately threw a CEL with code P0101.

I've seen some related threads on the forum and it sounds like it could be a couple of things, including bad MAP sensor, CAC hoses (which I don't understand how to check), maybe the fuel filter head or other possibilities. What would be your suggestions to help me narrow this down? Thanks!

Note: Sorry for the long post but I wanted to be sure to describe everything going on. Also, I'm in the middle of moving and won't have access to my tools for another two weeks... though I do have what I need for easy things like cleaning/replacing the MAP sensor.

The two codes (69, 101) are signs that the MAF (side of air filter box) and MAP (top/driver side of engine, towards rear) aren't tracking with normal engine operation as expected. It can be:

1) MAF is failed or failing, or fouled to the point of poor performance
2) MAP is failed or failing, or fouled to the point of poor performance
3) CAC hoses (turbo to Intercooler (IC), or IC to FCV/intake) are splitting
4) FCV/EGR aren't operating correctly

Clean and inspect the sensors, and inspect the connectors and associated wiring.
Pull the CAC hoses, remove the netting, and inspect - especially the underside - for tars or signs of leakage.
If you have a Scan gauge II, look at the sensor readings and see if they seem to make sense when the engine is operating.

I had a P101 code a little while ago. I cleaned the MAF sensor really well and replaced the air filter (was really dirty). After about 120 miles of driving my CEL went away.

i am having the same issues but have p0700, p0988, p0101 (ocassionally), and p0401 (rarely) came on and off a couple times.05 liberty crd 96k miles on mine.

Here's an update on my troubles with these codes (P0069 and P0101). I cleaned the MAP sensor, with no change in the codes. I had been cleaning it with every oil change. I removed the MAF sensor for the first time... it looked clean as a whistle so I reinstalled it.

I pulled the CAC hose on the driver's side (intercooler to FCV/intake) completely out to inspect it, and didn't find any signs of splitting. I tried removing the CAC hose on the passenger side (turbo to intercooler) but couldn't get at the rear hose clamp under the coolant reservoir, so I left that clamp on while checking the hose. Again, I didn't find any signs of splitting.

I believe I'm at the point where I start replacing sensors one by one to see if the problem goes away. I'll probably start with the MAP sensor and see what happens.

So today I unplugged the MAF sensor and some other plug that is on the side of the air box maybe the (ORM?) and it threw some more codes but never went into limp mode after I did this even with the A/C, so if that helps with any clues, give me some ideas. I am just leaving these 2 plugs off so it is drivable now. I am supposed to drive from southwest ohio to northern New York next weekend, and as long as the jeep isn't going to go into limp mode I am taking it, b/c there is dirt roads and stuff up there and not to car friendly. That is why I was hoping it would be fixed.

New symptom to report:
Today when I was driving home from work, I was stopped at a stoplight a couple blocks from where I had parked, and I noticed that the engine was idling much louder than normal. I can't say whether the sound may have been there when stopped before, as I'm usually playing music and at this particular stoplight the front of the Jeep was right next to a metal sign which reflected the noise back into the cab. I rolled the window down and it was loud, almost like an open exhaust pipe under the hood. Definitely not a normal idle sound.

It was 104 degrees and I had the A/C turned on. Then I tried turning the A/C off, and the idle went immediately back to its normal sound. I turned the A/C on and off a couple of times, and the idle noise kept changing along with it. However, after driving the rest of the way home (about 7 miles) I couldn't get this idle sound test to repeat.

Now I'm thinking that maybe the problem isn't a sensor at all. It could be the FCV/EGR, as msilbernagel noted in #4 above. Would the FCV/EGR be activated (or fail to activate) while stopped by switching the A/C on or off?

Or, perhaps the idle noise is a downstream effect of a failed sensor. Anyway, before buying a new MAP I'm going to keep my ears on the idle for while. If it repeats I'll pull over and try to see exactly where the sound is coming from.

Well I drove it some more today and limp mode came back a couple times, it's weird, it seems like as long as the A/C is off it never goes into limp mode. A/C on it goes into limp mode as soon as the engine warms up all the way.

I ran a Freeze Frame on my actron obdii scanner today while cruising steady at 45-50mph in 3rd gear limp mode appox. 2k+RPM. Here is what that showed at that time.

Frame 1 Mod $12

Engine Speed 894 (RPM)
ABS FRP 43520.00 (PSI)
VEH Speed 6 (mph)
IAT 61 (íF)
coolant 70 (íF)
MAP 100.0 ("HG)
MAF 12.77 (LB/M)

Maybe someone can point the problems out or help lead me to where to get help with this info. Also checked the codes and P0988 and P0700 were the only 2 that showed up.
