Tow hook hardware kit

Someone told me awhile ago that there is interest in the hardware for tow hooks. This appears to be the original hardware that is installed on the assembly line. The stud plates look a LOT stronger than the M bolt that comes in the accessory kit. You'll have to remove the front bumper to install these but I think it would be worth it. If I had these holding in my tow hooks, the passenger side probably wouldn't have been pulled off.

I hope this helps anyone looking for the hardware to install those tow hooks sitting there without the hardware. I highly recommend that anyone with the M bolt holding their tow hooks concider replacing it with this kit. :2cents:

I had a tow hook pulled through the uniframe on my KK and it looked like the weak link was the M bolt, it just doesn't have any surface area, the only point if contact is the edge of the radius.

These are what I have for my tow hooks. They came off a KJ that had the hooks installed from the factory. Installation was a bit more difficult than the M bolts due to having to remove the bumper, but I think it's worth it in light of how many people have had the M bolts rip through the frame.

I totally agree. I think that the M bolt was a bad idea because of the surface area in contact with the uniframe. A couple good yanks and it's on the ground. :2cents:

Ted15, thanks for this. I just installed tow hooks on my KK last week, but they came with the infamous M Bolts. I agree, the surface area of the M Bolt is pretty small. I'd hate to have mine ripped out during a recovery... So I'm seriously thinking of taking the bumper off again and fixing them again the right way.

I wish I could do it over again. I'm one of the unfortunate ones that had a tow hook pulled off. That was a bad feeling and I'd hate to see that happen to anyone else. I didn't even know this kit was available until today. :JEEPIN:

If there is interest in these i could make some that have a longer/wider plate to make them even stronger. Price would be a little less but not by much considering the price of grade 8 hardware. Pm if interested..

So just to make sure I got this right. They sell the tow hooks but they all come with the M bolts, which break, unless they were factory installed. So if I want to add factory hooks I gotta buy the Tow Hooks which run about $100, then buy the hardware kit just to make sure they wont cut through my frame like butter. so by this time we are talking nearly $200 with shipping for tow hooks. Back to the drawing board for me. I'm looking for alternatives here. :banghead:

Just a thought, on the same site that I saw the hardware kit, they list a pair of tow hooks that look the same as the KJ ones minus hardware. I didn't get the info for them but in retrospect that may've helped.
Another option, if you're up for it, is a Detoures backbone winch mount. If you don't intend to put a winch on your jeep, you can talk to Mark (the owner of Detoures) and he could probably come up with a design to incorporate only the tow points. The backbone is around $350 so recovery points should be considerably less. OR, if you're handy with tools, you could pick up a piece of 1/2" thick plate, mark a set of holes to match the tow hooks and drill and tap to match the hardware that came with them. :2cents:

Not sure if it makes a difference or not, but the 2 bolts are welded to the plate on the stock hardware. Something to consider if you elect to make your own

I had the same thought when I bought my tow hooks. I knew I wanted a bumper but they aren't readily available. Then, I got stuck and the tow hook ended up on the ground. The metal that makes up the uniframe is very thin, hard, but thin. The M bolt is just a bad design because if the thin uniframe. You could weld bolts through a plate, that's a good way to ensure grade 8 hardware. It really doesn't matter except for ease of assembly but if you use bolts make sure you can keep them from spinning while tightening. I like the idea of using the plate as a nut (threaded holes) and putting grade 8 bolts into it. The plate should also be something strong as well. I don't think that the only force is a shear force, while pulling on the hook, it also pills down on the rear bolt a little. :JEEPIN:

Curt makes a front receiver for the liberty. I've seen where guys would mount their winch in a cradle that fits into either the front or rear receiver and plugs into cables that have been run both front and rear. I think they used welding cable and snowplow plugs.

Yeah those are a little pricey. Plus there is only 1 point to pull from and it might hang pretty low.
Using Diggers pic for reference I want to put the receiver tubes and D-ring hitches through the circled area and have them removable, That if I decide to ever take them out.

I think someone did something similar to that. I saw it on lost somewhere but I probably couldn't find it again. It's worth looking for, I think he put measurements and part numbers in the thread. You might want to contact Detoures to see if they came up with anything for tow points. I'm pretty sure he looked into that awhile ago but I don't know if anything ever came of it. No reason to reinvent the wheel if it's been done.

found this and I think this is prolly what you are thinking of. Great idea but still gotta buy the OEM tow hooks, but it prolly allows for a stronger tow point. only a little stronger as its still atattached to the paper thin frame

If we could just find out the part number for the top plates (for lack of a better word) with the bolts welded in, they would be easy enough to order from the Jeep dealer. We wouldn't need the rest of the set, because the existing M bolts have nuts that can be reused, and the side clips/bolts that came with the tow hooks can be reused also. Can anyone get their hands on that Mopar part number for the top plates?

I recently ordered the stud plates from the Jeep dealer ($15 each). Today I got word that they arrived and I can pick them up. I should have a pair of M bolts for sale soon.
