Hi everyone, I'm looking into purchasing a used Liberty CRD and I'm wondering what kind of questions you would recommend asking the previous owner about the car regarding maintenance history specific to the CRD? Also, what are the MX intervals for certain components? (I.e. timing belt, turbo, water pump, oil, fuel filters, etc.)

I am not a stranger to small diesel engines, I currently own a 1999 Volkswagen Jetta TDI and do most of the work myself. I frequent TDIclub's forums and am very familiar with the ALH engine (& its quirks). Being that most diesel engines have quirks and no cars are made perfectly, I'm just looking to enhance my knowledge before buying.

I did read the Noob's guide to the CRD and it helped but it left me with questions still..

Thanks!

You're on the right track:

1) What regular service have you (or a shop) perform?
2) What service interval do you follow?
3) Receipts are nice but so many don't..

4) What modifications have been made, if any?
5) When were they made?
6) Who made them?
7) What parts were used?

8) What repairs have been made outside of regular maintenance? For example, failed EGR/FCV..., control arms, injectors, etc.

This will get you a good picture of what's been done, what's not been done and possibly needing (or about to) attention.. etc.

If it's anywhere near 100k miles, or more, the timing belt is an absolute necessity (for example).

Fumoto valve on the oil drain is a strongly recommended item. If/when the factory oil drain strips, permanent engine damage is typically well under way before you can pull over and shut off the engine. Literally, if it runs out of oil you have time to put it in neutral and turn off the engine before it fails.

Mark

Do you do a turbo cooldown each and every shutdown? Better yet, go for a test drive and sit in the passenger seat and have driver take you around and see if he/she does it. If not, run away ;-)

The number one question to ask the previous owner is:
ARE YOU AN ACTIVE MEMBER ON LOSTJEEPS.COM?

If the answer is no, then prepare yourself for plenty of preventative and catch-up maintenance bills.

X2 There are a few CRD's in my area and every one blows smoke. . . probably clogged EGR. The PO's of my CRD paid a king's ransom to the dealer service dept, who didn't replace the thermostat or fan clutch.
