Plasti Dip experiences

Thinking of using plastidip to change stock rims to a matte black. Also have
chrome side steps I would like to change to black also.

My question is, has anyone used plasti dip and what was your experience like? Any tips?

(yes I have googled and Youtubed it, just want some personal experiences)

Just did the sport flares on my KJ
easy to use, looks good

It doesn't look good after a couple months. Hard to clean and leaves water spots.
You have to use like a whole can per wheel for it to pull off like you probably saw on the youtube videos. I used three cans for my flares and bumpers and it wasn't nearly enough.
Ended up spending all day with can of paint thinner and a pile of rags getting it off. :banghead:

Good for the badges and thats about it imo.

I have painted my wheels grill emblems and my side skirting with no problems. i run it though a touchless carwash every now and again and it holds up great. for getting it really nice and clean dipyourcar.com sells a shammy they use specifically for dipped cars that leaves no fibers behind. works great.

Love the product and the ability to go "back to stock" very easily at a low cost.

I did all 4 flares and the side strips plus rock rails with two cans with some left
Have had it out wheeling, washed it quite a few times, no water spotting and looks good yet
I did it just to see what it would be like and so far its good

If you ever want to peel it off, its probably going to come off in little dime size pieces. I did 3 medium coats and thats what happened to me.

The side steps are really glossy chrome, could this be a problem at all? Or will it stick to everything if you prep it as suggested? Ie: degrease and alcohol

I've got a set of Renegade flairs that will be going on next so really don't care about these anyways, was only a test to see what people were talking about :ROTFL:

Will work fine. My grill was that glossy chrome and it sticks.

Does anyone use a clear coat over the top of their chosen colour? Or just the intended colour?

DipYourCar sells glossifiers that you can put over the top for a shinier appearance, but I don't think I'd use regular clear coat.

FWIW, the dipping I did to my wheels has held up fine the past couple of months. I'm probably going to peel it off though because I only did the driver's side wheels, and I don't like it enough to bother with the other side. I dipped the chrome on top of my shifter knob too and unfortunately that started peeling almost immediately. Probably needed a thicker coating, but since it gets handled frequently I guess that's not surprising.

Did my stock rims black a little over a month ago or so and it's holding up very well. I bought three cans, and didn't use them all. I also used some clear coat.

I used PlastiDip on my Libby a few weeks ago and here's how it went:

-DYC sort of tooled me around by not updating the website and got delayed about a week for delivery, they were super apologetic though
--They did have some awesome resources (videos, forum, etc) on the website though

-PlastiDip worked just as I expected - taped around my emblems and it came off nicely
--Here is my Jeep emblem on the front of the hood

-Wheels didn't even take a can of paint each -> used about 3 cans total, although I'm going to go back for another heavy coat soon
--Here is the wheel midpaint, I taped the caliper up and then used packing paper behind the rim

-Trim was super easy to do and overall super happy with how it all turned out

-It's been about a month since I've painted and it's held up well (including the 7 hour trek from NJ to VA to move in to college).
--Taken my Jeep to a few hands-free car washes but was super worried but the paint held up; I try to stick to DIY car washes to hang on the safe side

I would recommend it so far, overall had a great experience with it and a great DIY project for people who aren't gear heads or mechanically inclined :JEEPIN:

Just took my kk through a touch car wash got the best wash available without a tire shine(didnt want the chemicals in the shine to melt the dip) The dip held up fine. I have my grill, all emblems, wheels and my side skirting all dipped and not a single piece was damaged

The jeep is super clean once again! :JEEPIN:

I love how the jet rims come out with the tip...I did mine as well and loved the look...

I agree, the look is awesome. I didn't do a heavy enough coat though so I gotta do another coat or two in the next few days :banghead:

I apply 3 layers of plastidip and it was holding up pretty well until I wash my car with the power wash! :banghead:

The paint came off a little bit! Thank god I can just take it off and redo it... :BANANA:

For those of you who've done your wheels, have any of you had new tires mounted AFTER you did the Plasti-Dip? I would think that the mounting process would pull or chip some of the dip off.

Yeah, I don't think there's any way to change tires without re-dipping the rims.

I haven't changed my tires since I've dipped but I imagine that it'll pull the paint off. At that point you could redo the whole rim or just spray where it came off and touch it up.
