Lets talk CRD Water pumps

Lets talk water pumps. Please state your experience.

1. Have You had a CRD water pump failure. Miles?
2. Have you replaced your water pump? Miles & why?
3. If replaced what type? Any issues?
4. The pump is two pieces, did you replace both?

Also state if it was a Crown (AFAIK, EVERY Crown water pump installed failed in short order. I,personally, know of one.)
More importantly, if it was a factory original or replacement (VM pump, VM pump from Mopar), what failed? When? Was it original or was it replaced? Mileage is important. It seems most folks are replacing these at 100K as PM.

2. Have you replaced your water pump? Miles & why?just over 100k, during timing belt change. No problem with the pump, just decided to change it while I was in there.
3. If replaced what type? Any issues? Factory, remember to put all of the clamps back on. Somehow I did not, and went like that for over a year. Finally found my mistake chasing down a coolant leak.
4. The pump is two pieces, did you replace both?Both, I think you can only buy it from mopar as one piece.

I replaced the pump with a VM (sold by Mopar) at 109k, when I did the timing belt, as a preventative. I only changed the front half. The original pump was smooth and tight, but I just couldn't give Murphy that kind of opportunity.

Given my mileage I have nothing to add on pump life. However, on the how to: yes when you buy the pump it comes as a single part containing both the front and back halves bolted together (e.g. you cannot, as far as I know, purchase only the front 1/2). However, if you have looked at the WP replacement write-ups getting to the bolts to remove the entire pump assembly is a royal pain. As Sir Sam (see his detailed post on the TB job) and others have confirmed though the back 1/2 of the pump has no moving parts so there is no need to replace the back 1/2. Therefore it's much easier to remove the front half of the old pump while it's still bolted to the block, split that nice new pump assembly into the 2 halves, install the new front half, with the moving parts, onto the old rear half which cuts a lot of time off the job.

1. No
2. Yes, at 96K miles, did it as P.M. with timing belt.
3. Replaced with OEM Mopar/VM
4. Replaced the front half only. Even with the intake/cam housing removed, the rear half of the water pump is a PITA to remove, so I took the short cut...

Also, when putting the o-ring in place, use some silicone grease (not silicone sealant) to lubricate the o-ring, and to hold it in place. The o-ring is a thin diameter, and can come out of it's groove real easily. If that happens, your new timing belt is now garbage, and you'll be doing the job all over again!

When you split the new water pump, is there a gasket between the two halves?

If so, can you re-use the gasket that came in the new pump, or do you need to replace it with a new/fresh gasket.

It is an o-ring and can be re-used (from the new pump). You can also order that o-ring from Mopar AFAIK.

A1. No. N/A

Q2. Have you replaced your water pump? Miles & why?
A2. Yes; 100,030; Did it as part of the Timing Belt Service.

Q3. If replaced what type? Any issues?
A3. OE from the dealer; None to date.

Q4. The pump is two pieces, did you replace both?
A4. Yes. Get at the block mounting nuts with either a 13mm wrench (in front) or a 1/4" drive, 13mm socket that has a universal joint and an extension (for rear mounting nuts) The three bolts in back were a little tough, but do-able. Just take your time is the only advice I can give you.

This may be a good long lasting part?

How about our high milage CRD owners? How many miles dose your original pump have?

My friend has 270k on his original Cummins water pump.

Ok...We have one orginal failure at 107k from "DREWD"

I just pm him asking what indication he had that it was going bad. Leak? noise? Overheat? It did not break or jump the timing belt.

And three more in the second link I posted, but two of those are from users with 6 or 7 posts. Don't know what to think about those sometimes...

Only the Crown pump has ever been reported to have wiped out the belt, as far as I know.

2. Have you replaced your water pump? Miles & why? Yes, 148k - during other service (belts, idlers, thermostat, etc)
3. If replaced what type? Any issues? OEM
4. The pump is two pieces, did you replace both? Yes - probably would've done the 1/2 shell, but I had to pull the engine cover so it was easy to just pull the whole thing and not be concerned about sealing issues, etc.

DREWD PM me and said water leak.

So...thus far 3 or 4 original water pumps that leaked. Derwd stated he changed his antifreeze every 2 years. I have no idea how well the others took care of there CRD.

No water pumps yet that caused a timing failure.

2. Have you replaced your water pump? Miles & why? Pump was leaking, bearings caused failure
3. If replaced what type? Any issues? Factory orginal, replaced with VM from mopar
4. The pump is two pieces, did you replace both? just replaced front half

Did not cause any timing issues, but changed every thing under the cover.

Looks like 4 or 5 water pump failures with miles from 50k to over 200k all started leaking none caused a timing failure.

Have not heard from any Crown installed water pump people? I know Crown has had issues.
