Today I started building an auxiliary fuse panel for my electrical accessories. This will be mounted to the black metal bracket that is beneath and to the left of the steering column, behind the knee panel.
Image

The single screw on my aux fuse panel is the power in (hot) and the two screws on the other side are grounds. Power comes from a wire with a fuse holder attached to the battery + terminal. I also have a dedicated ground line going back to the - terminal. The relay will be switched by tapping a circuit that turns on with the key (the OEM power outlet), unless I disable it by moving the 20A fuse under the hood to the "on all the time" position. The other five circuits will be hot all the time (unless there is no fuse in the panel). So far I'm planning to use 2 of the 6 circuits: The switched circuit is for a second power outlet for the center console (will install it on the left side opposite the OEM power outlet). I will connect my CB radio to an unswitched circuit because I want that to be able to transmit and receive when the Jeep is off. The other 4 circuits can be for future mods. I'm thinking about adding an inverter or power outlet in the trunk, and maybe some roof rack lights eventually. :D

I installed my auxiliary fuse panel today. Three circuits are in use:
1) additional power outlet for the dash (switched with a relay to come on with acc power)
2) trailer light wiring harness (and a future rear inverter for tailgating and camping)
3) CB radio
There are three additional unused circuits on the fuse panel that I can use for future mods.

Nice CB radio install! I have the same Cobra radio and like it a lot. The antenna looks good on your rear tire carrier.

Ok, so my own adventures today... When I went out to start the Jeep the battery was :dead: . A friend had to jump it. :frankie: I drained too much power from the battery yesterday using my soldering iron (needed a jump yesterday too), but I drove around for more than an hour and charged it back up! (ScanGauge showed my alternator is working fine: 14.6V). The battery just didn't hold a charge overnight or later on this morning. So I replaced the battery today to the tune of $125. If it's dead again tomorrow I'll know there's a parasitic draw, because of a wiring mistake. But I'm really sure I wired everything right. Keep your fingers crossed!

Oh, and Cherrie and Musclez... Pics will be coming soon, but I got distracted today with the dead battery thing! :JEEPIN:

thanks lfhoward.

The coax install was easier than I thought. I'm starting to think that I'm drilling too many holes in the jeep..... :ROTFL:

Hey lowgunner. Good work on the install, however you may find that you won't be transmitting and receiving very well with the antenna at that location. There doesn't look to be enough antenna above the roof line so the car will be blocking the majority of signals in the forwards direction. From the Firestik website... "Mounting transmit antennas too close to other vertical surfaces restricts the antennas ability to radiate its energy and can cause unacceptable SWR problems"

I'd suggest trying to get it a little higher, simmiliar to the install I did. The base is about level with the roof with at least 2/3 clearing the roof and basket. Note this is a different antenna but you get the idea....

yeah, I was worried about that as well. But I have an inline SWR and the REF on channels 1, 20 and 40 is actually below 2:1 ratio. it's about 1.95 all way around. They say anything below 2:1 ratio is ok so I think I'm safe. However, you have a point, it may not get as much forward transmit distance even with this SWR reading, but time will tell.

forgot to mention that I do go into underground garages a lot (DC/VA area work) so I can't take it any higher. The 6'8'' max hight garages and I'm hearing ding, ding, ding every freaking time I go under a hanging sign in the garage.

Had a class 3 recevier installed today.

Looking at some D-Ring hitches for recovery.

I was thinking of going with this Warn from Quadratec.

Thoughts? It is a bit pricey, but unless there is a great alternative at a lower price, it isn't excessively expensive.

I did one better and made an illustrated write-up. It's posted in the "Electronics...Wiring...Stereo...CBs...Etc." section.

You'll definatly get what you pay for with that. They're hollow whereas the others are solid forged steel.

I looked at those in the store. It was held together but some weak lookin welds, no way I would trust that thing.
