Mechanic said they were bad and needed replaced, and since I've found a guy I trust, I had him order new ones. He installed them about an hour ago. He also showed me the old ones.

These engine mounts are not passive blocks of rubber, they are active devices, and they do go bad without appearing to the casual observer to be bad. Bad ones are one of two causes of a vibration under certain throttle settings and engine loads, a vibration you cannot miss at about 60 mph going uphill. The other cause is apparently TC failure. The new engine mounts are about $100 for parts plus an hour or so labor; a new TC is upwards of $400 and requires remove and replace the tranny. You do the math, and of course, if you fix the wrong one, the problem will not be solved.

So how do you tell if the engine mounts a bad? This is a problem, especially since like so many things they go bad slowly, so you might not notice them degrading.

The answer, my friend, isn't blowing in the wind, it is sitting quietly in your driveway, engine idling, transmission in neutral. With your foot on the brake, slide the shifter into drive. There will be a noticeable change in the engine idle speed. If your mounts are good, there will no almost no change in the vehicle vibration. Ignore changes going the other way, from drive to neutral. But if the shift from neutral to drive results in a significant vibrational change, I think you need new mounts.

When I climbed in my Jeep after the swap, started the engine, and dropped it in drive, I was astonished. The difference was huge. Driving down the street, I also noticed a lot less vibration. But of course, unless you've just had new mounts installed, you won't be able to tell. Do the driveway test.

When my mechanic showed me the old mounts, he shook them, and they sounded like a box of marbles rattling. He said when the Jeep was up on the lift, engine idling, he could see the passenger side mount flapping loosely, which is how he knew it was toast.

How can you tell they are in need of replacement? I just replaced by TC and installed the shift kit.

That method is a pretty good indicator if you cannot get under the vehicle. If only one mount is bad you can generally tell which one by putting your foot on the brake and put the vehicle in gear if your vibrations are worse in drive then it is your passenger side mount if it is worse in reverse it is you driver's side.

my engine has tried to climb out of the engine compartment when I've done that

at a stop at idle - if the mounts are broken - you'll hear a differenence D to N to R
