I'm feeling froggy and wondering if anyone has pulled their motor? How big of a PITA is it? Any info would be appreciated.

Pulling it? What went wrong? Yes.. they are a pain in the booty.

In general
1. Start in the FNT the grill, bumper, fan, intercooler, rad, and air cond stuff all needs removed.
2. Then wiring harness needs disconnected both left and right
3. Exhaust, and fuel
4. Skids, Transmission

That sounds easy but its not. I would down load the manual.

This thing is leaking oil from somewhere, and I'm too dang tall/big to look very deep into it. I have a pro vent and and there seams to be an awful lot of oil coming out of the ccv, I am careful to only fill it between the min and max line. Im tempted to pull it and fix any oil leaks, put in the suncoast tc i bought and replace my glow plugs. Im going to go ahead and download those manuals. Thanks

I think you will find out you can fix most oil leaks way prior to pulling the engine. CCV leaks? be sure the oring is clean and in place. You also and take the CCV apart and clean it with somthing like carb cleaner? If its not leaking but still getting alot of oil to the Provent, you may need to clean out the Provent. I clean mine every oil change. Be sure to use a quality oil Like Mobil 1 0w-40. Also... Turbo chargers will leak oil if your air filter requires changing or cleaning.

Good luck!

Big thing, how much oil is in it? Are you filling it up to the full line? Full is overfull and it will burp out the CCV until it reaches the Add line, which is where the full line is suppose to be (6.4 qts with the stock filter).

Check your provent hose connections. Did you use hose clamps? Thought I had an engine oil leak until I rechecked my hose clamps on my provent one day and found they had all loosened off slightly and were slowly dripping oil in a couple spots. I found they need to be checked everytime I change my oil.

If it runs, it does NOT need to be pulled. You are asking for problems. These engines do not suffer severe problems politely or for very long before really bad noises and damage happens. If it runs and sounds good - you are experiencing something else.

Thanks for the advice, guess I'll leave the heart in the beast...for now  I'm gonna check all my provent fittings and see if any oil is leaking out of the turbo.

Leaking from the turbo is most likely (try 90% probability) the airbox-to-turbo hose that has been rotted away at the turbo by the oil contamination. That hose is $60 from the dealer only, but the real reason you may have oil all over that is you are overfilling the oil.

The dipstick is not accurate on the CRD, since they basically took the same part off the shelf and didn't bother to get one correctly sized for our motor. If you are using the stock oil filter size, the correct oil fill is 6.4 quarts. In practice, this is really hard to get right... So most people switch to the slightly-larger-yet-much-better-quality Mobil 1 M1-301 filter. With that one in place, the proper fill is 7 full quarts. Start the engine and let it idle for about a minute, then shut it off and let it sit for 10-15 minutes. NOW check your oil level, and mark the dipstick. That is your correct oil fill amount. Any more than that, and the CCV will just splatter it into your Provent, saturating it and polluting the intake hoses again.

The reason this happens, is that we have hydraulic lifters. Each of these ejects straight up into the top of the valve cover / upper intake (so DO NOT OPEN THE FILL CAP with the engine on! - You won't like the result!) and at the back, 2 lifters are directly under the intake port for the CCV - so easy access to that airstream. There is an excessive amount of CCV flow on these engines anyway, but the excess oil level apparently builds in the top of the engine and makes its way out through the CCV. When the oil is filled properly, for whatever reason, this doesn't happen.

Ditto to which I will add
1. while the proper oil fill quantity is what geordi notes, remember that exactly where that level falls on the dip stick varies between vehicles and varies somewhat based on the amount of time the engine is turned off before measuring the oil level not to mention whether the ground under the vehicle is reasonably level. IMHO measuring the level shortly (less than 5 minutes) after shutdown, such as might be done during fuel fillup, will produce an inaccurate low reading. Small oil passeges = slow return of oil to the pan.
2. when hunting oil leaks it's best to degrease engine first but be very careful not to direct forceful water or degreaser spray at electrical connections.
