Hello all, I have read the newbie guide and I am planning on purchasing a 2006 Jeep Liberty CRD limited this weekend, and I was just wondering if anyone could give me some input on things to check out before handing over the cash. The libby has 108k on the clock and the state of the service records are unknown at this time as I am currently in China on business and will return on Friday, Sat I am to go look at and hopefully buy the jeep. I have the dealer down to 10,000 which seems to be a good price for a limited but I'm not sure really. I'm going to bet that the TB has not been changed so I plan on doing that doing the GDE ECU re-tune and I'd like to get a new TC all before years end. Thanks for the help in advance.

Try to see if any OBDII codes are stored in the ECU.

Timing belt for sure but I see you are on top of that. Fluids (ATF, oil, coolant, etc.) should be drained/flushed and refilled with correct fluids if you don't know what's in there. Check turbo/intercooler hoses for oil soak and tears (need to pull from vehicle to check) unless Samcos and while off check airbox to turbo hose for tear on bottom just in front of turbo and while there check turbo wheel for play (slight for/aft ok; side to side should be no more than a hint of motion if that) Other than that pretty standard checks on tires, brake pads, suspension, etc.

I would not rush to put $s in a new TC unless 1) it's shuddering in which case you have to or 2) you just want to and have spare $s. The post F-37 TC is ok as long as it's treated right and you use ATF+4 in which case it will last until it needs replacing unless you do something outside it's operation range like I did by installing the GDE Stage II turbo.

Read Sir Sam's Noob Guide first, and look at all of those things and check them. Also the Air supply line running from the air box to the turbo inlet will be torn at the bottom. Check both of the intercooler hoses for cracks and tears. Check the tops of both sides of the intercooler and the radiator for signs of leakage. Both of the front wheel bearings will probably need changed if they haven't been already. Check for the Rear Control arms recall.

The engine shouldn't be putting out black smoke, if it is then there's something wrong somewhere. I could see a little if you stomp the turbo but it shouldn't be black honestly under normal engine operation.

Ask for service records, specifically the timing belt change at 100k. Many will tell you and I'm personally experiencing (right now) how bad it can be if you skip that maintenance at 100k miles.

Good Luck.

One not run on 0W-40 Mobil 1 and with the EGR shut off.
Here is one run by the Mopar Book with 0W-40 oil and full force EGR:

This 2.8L only got to 78K.

If he could turn all that carbon into diamonds, he would have a pile of rocks.
