Hi,

I have an '05 KJ CRD with 182000km's or 110000miles. When I reach a speed of approx 60mph or 100kmh the ABS amber light comes on and the ODO stops working. I have had the same happen at a lower speed when messing around in 4x4.

I have checked the front sensors - all seem to be tight and in their place - traced some of the wiring and found no scuff marks etc. Unplugged the rear sensor and sprayed some Q20 into it and put it back again.

After that the same happens - round about the 60mph the light comes on again :?

Any idea chaps??

Regards from sunny South Africa,

Richard

It is my understanding that it is likely the ABS sensor that goes to the rear differential; Not sure why it would be speed dependant. Attempting to ressurect it is certainly logical. However, I think at this point the sensor has expired. Hope this helps.

It is the wiring harness leading to the rear sensor.

One of the thin wires has snapped in two inside the wire casing/plastic cover.

You can't see it and it occurs within a 16" long section of wire from the connector back.

replace it with a new connector assembly from the dealer, $17.

Make sure the wires are connected correctly, they go on one way.

Thanks for the replies. Can't I just cut the stoopid plugs off and solder the wires neatly ?

Its also possible the tone gear in the front hubs has been damaged. This will mean you need new hubs.

If all your wiring checks out(you can test with a multimeter for free) then you may need new front hubs.

The ABS still works perfectly so it must be a wire or a sensor :?

Sure, If you can find where the the split occured.

That is the hard part because you can't see through the plastic.

From my recent experience, if your brake light isn't on then it's NOT your rear wiring. Likely your front sensor/tone ring like sirsam said. If you unplug your rear your brake light should then turn on confirming the wiring is okay. But since your light isn't on at start up, it could be an erroroneous reading at ANY sensor. I paid a dealer to read my code to tell me which side mine was and made sure what type of error was popping the code. Worth 40 bucks to only buy the parts needed.

Off topic but at the amount of "mileage" I hope you have done the timing belt job. Much more important that the TB job be done than fixing your current, likely sensor, problem.

My KJ has a full service history so I assume it has been done - if the motor break I'll drop an prop Yankee International V8 in there

Not a safe thing to "assume" best take a close look at that full service history for documentation that it was done. If no documentation the safest assumption is that it has not been done and go ahead and get it done.

There is a Technical Service Bulletin issued for 2005 KJs advising that the rear diff sensor be replaced by the Dealer....don't know if this applies to Export models!

The wrong rear diff lubricant was used which chews up the sensor....dealer has to drain and replace with correct fluid and replace sensor....this may be your problem! :?

TSB is: TSB-08-048-05

My 2002 CRD 2.5 had the TB replaced by the Dealers...McCarthys in Pretoria...at 80,000 kms.
I do not know why this was done...to make money I suppose....as the belt is only supposed to be replaced at 160,000 kms!

Here is the link to the TSB: http://www.lostjeeps.com/forum/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=72231
