Saw a CRD listed on Craigslist locally. He said it has just had the turbo and transmission computer replaced. What would have caused them to fail? Would the causes of the failure have anything to do with each other? Would they be warning signs for further problems coming up in the near future?

The price is right, I think, but also makes me a little worried. It has 40,000 miles on it and he's asking $10k.

Seems like a steal, but also seems like there must be something lurking in there that has the price so low, but I'd like a list of what to look for, listen for, and ask the owner.

Thanks,
Jon

Maybe those parts were replaced on dealers best guess?

Maybe he drove it hard and never let the turbo cool down? Low quality oil? Sucking dirt in threw ripped air box hose could be an few things

He said he's selling it to a friend, but if that falls through I'll get a call. No mechanical problems, they are retired and only live here a few months of the year

Did you hear about the guy who was hooked on brake fluid?
He swears he can stop any time.

I would ask to see the service record. I'd also run a Carfax.
