Sold! I was hoping to see a 4-cyl option in a pickup first, but I've been really itching to get a pickup and don't really need the 850 ft-lb Cummins.

The sad thing could be, as in Grand Cherokee's case, only a "beefed up" ram model will be available with diesel. And I really don't want to pay extra for leather seats, premium sound and shiny buttons. I saw on another forum people posting that ram half ton will be fully customizable. I guess we'll see.

Howdy, dear CRD'er!

Yep, just came across this fantastic news! I already ordered my 2013 RAM w/ Pentastar but will keep a VERY close look on the development and history once the diesel version is officially sold & on the road. The one issue right now is diesel price, and though I still miss my lil' tank, I am a bit appalled by the price at the pump... At least, my winter beater drinks reasonably (Suzuki X-90)... Don't laugh :ROTFL: )

Whatever.
I'll believe it when I see it.
Remember when Ford announced it would put a V6 Powerstroke in the F150? :x

Understand...BUT...the announcement is official. It makes sense (they're already putting the same engine in the Grand Cherokee), and Chrysler seems to have gotten to the realization that you don't announce something unless you're 99% sure you've got it, and about 90% sure on your schedule. It might slip to the right a month or two, but at this point, barring a complete economic collapse (a la "Great Depression II") this sounds like a done deal. After all, it was the first economic failure that killed the Big 3 plans to do this when they were all talking about it. Chyrsler has a proven engine (at least the Euro 5 version) and is boosting their truck production. They believe this will garner them an ADDITIONAL 10,000 units.

Fuel cost figures are ballpark my market - somewhere around a 45 cent spread, but I've seen double that lately. I've seen diesel and 93 octane almost the same price, and I've seen a 20-30 cent spread. Subtract 40 cents or so for 87, which is standard for most of the gas engines. My Challenger calls for 91+ as it's a 6-speed manual Trak Pak version.

Ram 1500 CRD 4x4 (VM A630) est 26 MPG at $4.20/gal = $0.16/mile

JGC CRD 4x4 (VM A630) est 28 MPG at $4.20/gal = $0.15/mile

Ram 1500 3.6 L V-6 gas 4x4 est 25 MPG at $3.75/gal = $0.15/mile

JCG 3.6 L V-6 gas 4x4 est 23 MPG at $3.73/gal = $0.17/mile

Ram 1500 (or JGC) 4.7 V-8 or 5.7 L V-8 Hemi est 20 MPG at $3.75/gal = $0.19/mile

I don't want it for the possible savings in fuel. I want to be able to tow an 8klb travel trailer without the need of getting a 3/4 ton and I want a diesel for the torque.

I would be very surprised if it will have an 8000 lb. tow capacity. Hope to be wrong about that.

With the JGC having a 7500 lb capacity, I am hoping with a little better gears, it will have 8k+. The ecoboost gasser has a 10k+ tow rating with the towmax and 3.73 gears. That engine has 420ft/lb of torque.

Where did you find the MPG listing for the Ram CRD? Or is this just your guesstimate?

Its gonna be a tough sell if the RAM CRD only gets 26mpg.
Especially since the gas v6 gets 25mpg.
If the diesel v6 has the same towing capacity as the gas v6, the same fuel mileage, and
costs $3-4000 more, I dont see how it will sell.

I would be surprised too. Proportionally, the 2.8 VM in the KJ platform is rated to pull 5000# with roughly 300 ft/lbs of torque. If the same proportion is used (not adjusted for difference in vehicle weight, 8 vs 5 speed trans, or gearing) The v-6 VM diesel rated at 420 ft/lbs would pull 7000 #

Obviously the 2.8 VM can pull more as is with the 5 speed trans behind it. I wonder what it could do with the 8 speed.

Dunno. Just food for thought.

Here is the clip from the Jeep press release.

Quote:
The Grand Cherokee's 3.0-liter, EcoDiesel V-6 engine promises 240 horsepower and the ability to tow up to 7,400 pounds.

Read more: http://www.foxnews.com/leisure/2013/01/ ... z2L4sXlmmk

If that is with conservative gears, say around 3.55, and you can get more aggressive gears in the pickup, say 3.92, you should be able to pass the 8K easily.

Specs on the Hemi

395 hp @ 5,600 rpm
407 lb-ft of torque @ 3,950 rpm

The Hemis in the 1500s are tow rated at 10K+ with the 3.92 gears.

ChooChooman74 I hope you are right.

I have no doubt about the ABILITY of the VM powered Ram to do that. Do not know how it will be RATED. Remember, the guberment could foul up a 1 car (or Jeep) parade.

With the right gearing, even a Toyota could tow the space shuttle. Just a tad beyond the rated capacity.

If it's geared to steep fuel economy will suffer. A longer wheel base should equal more stability under towing conditions which is part of the rating. So who knows? We shall see.

BTW, you, Mr GDE, better get ready to provide the mandatory tune :google:

Your products are what made me love my Jeep soooo much! Can't wait to see what could come up in a very foreseeable future for these new additions from the Chrysler stables
