I have been happy with it for a while, but I will not be keeping it.
It's served me well for a year. I bought it at about 76,000 a year ago and put a TON of miles to it with constant 300 mile trips on the weekend and such. The only issues have been electrical (ABS & Odomoter will not move), and EGR (which was disabled w/ ORM long ago). This was until my water pump leaked out all of my antifreeze and my engine overheated. I'm still working to get that fixed as we speak.
The engine overheating was partly to blame on my ignorance, but that's not the reason I am parting ways with it after it is fixed. The reason is that things in this car are expensive to fix and the parts are rare. If I had a gas Liberty, which I would never have, I would be looking at half the cost of replacing an engine for the diesel.
My next car is probably going to be something more generic and...foreign. I'm getting out of the small diesel game, as much as I want to to get a Jetta TDI next. All cars are going to break, but I want one that is usually cheap and easy to fix. I will surely miss driving the CRD though. I probably will get a cheap Jeep of some sort for a 4x4 backup vehicle one day.
Then a 99 cherokee is for you, if you don't mind the bad mileage... 2000 and 2001 have some head issues, just FYI, you may or may not have them. 99 though is a winner and also cheap to maintain. Vw golf/Jetta tdi is also a great little diesel, but the don't come in 4wd here, that's why in fact I didn't buy one. You definitely won't have the issues you have with the crd, Vw in fact tests their engines for us market very thoroughly.
