Wife pulled up to the house today with coolant pouring out under the jeep. From the back of the engine, looks to be above the starter.

Coolant line? Any ideas? I tried visual inspection, but can't see up in there.

I don't know but whatever you do make sure you place it safe and not blow up your engine like I [probably] did.

I'd make sure it's actually coolant. If the coolant level is low, is guess its the water pump or a hose. Hard to know because of the engine shield. Whatever you do, don't drive it till you find out what's going on and fix it. It's cheaper than buying a new engine, lol. If you can't identify the leak easily, take the engine shield off and look underneath to see where is dripping from.

How many miles on the crd? What parts had been replaced? Any scheduled maintenance done?

Definitely coolant. Water pump was replaced a month ago on the 100k service.

Engine shield?

So it's not the water pump then. I would get under the jeep and take the engine shield out. Crd has an engine shield, rock/slide guard. 4 bolts. I'd take that out and look where water drops from. Without taking it out its hard to see. Possible who serviced your car didn't tie everything properly or there is a hose punched or who knows... It's very hard to pinpoint without looking.

Oh, a skid plate? It's dripping directly above the starter. Drivers side.

I edited the previous post bc I sent it before finishing... I don't recall exactly what source of water is on the top of starter, it may be the hose for the plastic extra coolant reservoir, I'd get a flashlight, position it on the top of starter (or where it seems to be the leak from) and try to point it straight up, it should show what's on the top and see the source of leaks. It shouldn't be too hard to see.

Yes, I think the EGR cooler is about the only coolant line on that side. There's usually some excess hose there unless it broke in the middle.

It isn't too bad to get to, plan on taking your fuel head off though.

There are two coolant lines running to the EGR cooler, one is the in the other is the out, if either is cut the fluid will leak out. There are spring clamps on the hoses. Make sure you disconnect the battery before getting in there as it is easy to short the starter 12 v supply.

Most likely the EGR cooler, lines, or EGR valve cooling lines. If it is the cooler, we have one for cheap if you need it. All this stuff is directly above the starter.

Is it possible to bypass a leaking EGR cooler if the EGR is neutered?

Keith has indicated that if you have a GDE tune you don't need a functional EGR cooler. To bypass you need to loop 2 coolant lines together; the one that connects to a metal tube that runs over the top of the engine (in front of the oil filler IIRC) and the one that comes out of the block. You can not just cap those lines as they are critical to coolant circulation. You can however remove the 2 little lines the go to the cooler or not as you wish.

If repairing the EGR coolant lines doesn't fix it. then you most likely are spilling coolant out of of the weep hole in the back of the reservoir.

Coolant is known to trail down the firewall and drip from the frame rail down onto the pavement creating a puddle under the passenger side.

Do you see signs of coolant in the reservoir part of the expansion tank? That is the right side of the expansion tank.

If you do, then I am sorry to inform you but you may have a leaky head gasket.

Confirm it by using an exhaust gas leak detector kit.

turns out it is the EGR cooler.

Question of the day... If I unplug the MAF, until I get the tune, can I just bypass the cooler? Thanks.
