The 3.0L VM uses the Bean Counter Engineered CP4 instead of the more reliable CP3. Google the CP4 and you will find more failures all the time. Bosch, VW, & Ford all blame the failures on fuel contamination, the same fuel contamination that does not phase the CP3 used on Cummins and our CRDs. With the added expenses of DPFs and SCRs soon to be added to some gassers as well in 2014, manufactures are trying to do all they can to cut costs. Cutting the costs like they are with the CP4 will bite them in the bank account. When a Mega Law Firm is smart enough to have a two diesel vehicles one with a CP3 and another with a CP4 and have the CP4 trash the fuel system costing $3K-$4K on so called contaminated fuel with the CP3 going on like nothing happened, those Lawyers will be able to buy their own private jets. Bosch is a privately held company owned by the Bosch family and families descended from Robert Bosch's close friends, so don't worry about your 401K or retirement pension, they can't buy Bosch stock at any price.
ZF can build what ever the buyer wants, good or junk. I have worked on and even owned some ZF transmissions that were great and other ZF transmissions were total junk from day one because they were a bad design. We will all see if Chrysler specified a good ZF or junk.

Ditto on warp on CP4 pumps. The diesel forums, especially Ford's and VW TDIs, are full of horror stories about CP4 pump failure and dealerships blaming it on contaminated fuel (water in fuel) resulting in 8-10k dollars of repair bills for the poor owner. I've never had a water in fuel problem with any of my diesels to date but apparently the smallest amount of condensation in tank trashes the newest offering from Bosch.

Two other common contaminants that put up the warranty denial flag are trace amounts ethanol and ethylene glycol. Just a tiny amount of cross contamination with ethanol laced gasoline or someone's blow coolant hose leaking onto the lot when parked over the tank filler location at the station can screw you over and void your warranty. In my opinion, this is insane.
Where are all the greedy shark lawyers when they are needed?

Why do you think I went BACKWARDS in time when I got out of the CRD and went to an 03 Jetta TDI? Simpler design with the VE pump, basically a mechanical pump design that had some technology stuffed into the top. Easy for any bosch shop in the world to rebuild, mechanical injectors, no SCR or magic regen cycles. Killed off the EGR and it is running fine.

266k miles on the original engine, automatic transmission, and even original pump and nozzles. I plan to upgrade the nozzles and get a tune soon, but I'm still pulling down an honest 37mpg at 80mph (GPS) even on winter diesel.

My crystal ball is showing these headlines... "Chrysler failure eminent due to US public disdain for mid sized diesel vehicle."
The translated version is, "The US wanted a mid size diesel, well, we gave it to 'em with some of the very best bean counter engineering we could cheaply afford and they poo pooed it."

My local jeep dealer's "diesel" tech admitted he doesn't have all of the Miller tools for the Liberty CRD and doesn't have a single Miller tool for the GC CRD. He also threw away most of his diesel tech books from the course he took when the KJ CRD came out in 05.

He doesn't think the new diesel Grand Cherokee will sell but thinks Chrysler will hit a home run with a 1500 diesel truck. I told him to get back in the books because he'll be busy repairing a lot of "contaminated fuel" vehicles.

I read somewhere the 3.0L V6 was going to be in the "upscale" trim (expensive) levels so they're making the same mistake they did in the 07-08 GC's with the MB V6.
But they are in good company because the VM diesel option in the Chevy Cruze for the US will only be available in the two top trim levels :5SHOTS:

The V6 in the Grand Cherokee is Limited/Overland/Summit only. $4500 option on Limited & Overland, ~$5000 on Summit.
CP4 for North American markets has the anti-wear coatings for low-lubricity protection in pump and injectors, much like the KJ domestic version had.
To my knowledge not all OEMs using the CP4 elect to pay additional money for this.

The engine in the Cruze is NOT the VM engine (licensed to GMDAT) that is used in the Asian markets, but instead the 2.0L that was born of the GM/Fiat cooperation of some years ago.
This engine should still use the CP1H pump, much to your pleasing.
