Glad you got to the bottom of it. Sorry to hear it was the rockers so soon. 92k miles seems low for that sort of thing, but looking at all the threads and Keiths input on the rocker/oil/soot issues there will probably be more CRD's out there with this. :(

Good luck on the build and at least you will have pretty much a new KJ to drive after this! New rockers, cams, timing belt/water pump....you're good to go another 100k till the next TB change.

I bet it looks like a grenade under the valve cover...can we have some photos for posterity? :P

The seal removal is the bad part.

FYI...the cam's also have a washer under the snap ring. newer replacement cams do not use the snap ring. so don't get confused when the washer dose not fit with the snap ring. After several calls to jeep I found out.

What holds the cams if the snap ring isn't used on the new cams?

Sorry...I did not explain correctly (it was late) New replacement cams do not use the "WASHER" that goes under the snap ring.

I purchaced my cams at Mopar online.

Guy I know at the dealer parts counter says the plugs were one of 2 ways, either press in or screw in. Mine appear to be screw in. They have a big hex on them to get a wrench on.

Parts should be delivered today, thank you IDPARTS, and I ordered the cams this morning, and IDPARTS, split the next day air cost with me so I should have them by this weekend. I want to try to get this thing back together this holiday weekend. I hope........

Just be very careful putting the intake cover back on, also be sure to bleed the fuel lines at the #1 injector as well as at the fuel head.

I would do the fuel head first then do the #1 injector.

It's still going to sound very rough for a bit, trust me.....

If you decide to make your own simple guide pins like I did, they are 8mm x 1.25 pitch bolts that hold the cover on.

It makes life easier if you remove the dipstick back there, but you don't have to.

If you haven't ordered the valve cover gasket yet, do that now. You're also going to need the copper crush washers and the o-rings for your injectors, it's kinda required unless you want to develop a fuel leak later.

You're also going to need some Lubriplate, or similar variant, for assembly lube. I would put a bit on the cam lobes, and dip the lifters into a cup of 0w40 oil before you install them.

Plan on an oil change approximately 1000-1500 miles after you do this, and you NEED to do this.

Mine were press in. Good advise from Hexus. My advise when installing the Injectors is to loosely install everything, then torque down the injectors and tighten all the lines. If its hard to get a line on, your probably going to have a leak there.

Did you think about changing the glow plugs? Even if your not changing, Pull them out to inspect and reinstall them with anti-seize. Much harder to get them out when the intake is on.

Yes, I have the copper seals and orings. All the other parts came today. Should have cams tomorrow. Hoping to have it together this weekend. I hope. I got the intake all cleaned out and read for the new cams. All the soot cleaned out too. Wow, that was a mess. Yes, I plan on pulling the glow plugs just to make sure they'll come out so that hopefully I can get new ones in a few weeks when I do the GDE ECO tune. I've got a few other things I needs to do to the Libby too.

I plan on posting pics of the damaged parts after I get it all done!

Thanks guys, I really appreciate all the help!

Thanks! I should be fine, I'm just not real up on these little diesels. Gassers are no problem. I build all my own race engines in my race jeep, but these little smokers are new to me. Thanks again!

Ok, I need help again.....

What's up with my old water pump? And what do I do now? Look at the pic, tell me why the little hole, left lower of the big hole, is open on the new pump? Old one is sealed and not machined open like the new one, and the threaded hole is not threaded on the old pump... And its not a plug. Now what do I do???? Kinda stuck til I figure this out

I just swapped back halves. Only feasible option I had so I ran with it. I was wrenching and needed to keep moving.

Pulled the glow plugs tonight and checked them out, one bad one. So thats next on the list. I was surprised how easy they came out. Anti seized the threads and reinstalled, waiting till I get replacements.

Cams should be here tomorrow, the intake is ready for them. Then the fun part, setting the valve cover on the head, and hoping the rockers stay put! Then start the reassembly of everything else. Man I can't wait till this things running! As bad as the rockers were, I cant believe it even ran, let alone ran pretty decent! It ought to run like a raped ape when I'm done! Since it'll have twice the air flow, and twice the valve lift.....!!! :SOMBRERO:

Ill keep you posted!

Photos?

I'd love to see the damage/wear on the arms and the failure points up close.

Well......... It runs!! :pepper:  :pepper:

It started right up after a little bleeding. Got it all buttoned up tonight, it runs great! New cams, rockers, and complete timing belt kit. The only thing I didn't change was the thermostat. I can always do that any time. Next is glow plugs. I did find the intake tube from the airbox to the turbo is broken right at the clamp on the turbo, so I'll need a new one of those. Everything went together good, a few minor hiccups but nothing major. Thanks again guys! I will post pics of the carnage later.

That is great news!

The intake hose is a common problem, EHM to fix it by keeping the oil FAR away from that soft hose. Dealer item only, $55.
