It was meant to be. I am having this problem, and I remembered there was an issue discussed OTHER than just the dipstick being too long. (So many dirty jokes to be had in this thread) I will be checking my vent plug immediately as I've been all over muddy roads with thick clay and muck. I had this problem years ago, but it's been fine for quite some time now. I know that I have ONE way to put the dipstick in that allows it to stay, but now it comes out regardless. Could a clogged vent be causing any sluggish performance in the trans? I have been feeling a little slippage when I'm almost stopped and then the light turns green and I go again. From a dead stop, I feel like there is almost a 2 second lag before the Jeep takes off and spins the tires unintentionally. I'm not trying to hijack the thread, but are these sluggish symptoms in any way related to a popping dipstick?
2 second lag from a dead stop?
Sounds like normal turbo lag to me.
Or could be low transmission fluid.
While at a dead stop, turn O/D off, pull the shifter down to 1st, and try shifting it manually.
Keep an eye on the tach and keep your shift points below 2500rpm.
(2nd gear comes really quick, about 5-10mph, 3rd comes in at about 20mph)
If you are not getting firm noticeable shifts then you might have a problem.
This transmission seems pretty lackadaisical at times.
When I'm rolling along between 15-20mph and accelerate, the transmission wont always down
shift from 3rd to 2nd. Makes it feel sluggish.
If I manually downshift to 2nd at that point, then it feels great.
