Motor ran fine with some throttle, just would not hold idle without a little throttle. Thermo temp sensor was NOT connected. Keith seems to think the motor is fine. I am just trying to clarify and make a decision about the injection pump timing.

Everything was lined up with my Miller VMM tools. Currently, the cam and flywheel pins are in. The crank mark is at 3 o'clock and the injection pump pulley is exactly where it was when I locked everything and took it apart. I believe the flywheel pin is in the correct hole because I can only move the crank back and forth very little with the pin in. From the pictures of the flywheel I have, the cutouts would allow a great deal more movement . However, I was never able to find a place where all the pins went in AND the injection pump pulley marks lined up despite umpteen crank rotations.

So, I marked the pulley where it was and put everything back where it presumably was when it left VMM. I vaguely remember someone saying that often they come from the factory this way, but I may be wrong about that.

1. How many crank revolutions will it take (as currently configured) to determine if the injection pulley will eventually line up with the factory marks at the same time as when all the pins also fit? (Before I take it apart again and rotate the pump pulley, I might as well try this one more time.)

2. So, my decision is, if I cannot magically get the pump pulley to line up with multiple additional rotations when everything else lines up, should I take the belt off and just spin the pulley to line up with the factory marks. Even though I know the pump is timed just as it was for its whole life since it left the factory.

Thanks as always,

DOC

1. Should only take 3 to line up.

2. It should not make your engine to run that bad. Your choice.

Hope its just air or a dirty injector.

Did you try starting? and do a suck blow dollar bill check.

I recall the first timing issue i had on a CRD. Was off one tooth. Broke rockers. Since then i have been trying to help stop the issues related to bad timing procedures.

I was wondering how many teeth off it takes for the pistons to hit the valves. Since it ran OK, just would not hold an idle without a little throttle, I think the cam/crank timing is OK.

Do you mean one CRANK tooth off, or intake to exhaust?

Thanks!

IT ONLY TAKES ONE tooth off the crank to break rockers. Mainly exhaust. The engine will still run, just not run very good at idle and will not produce lots of power.

If the TB is changed correctly the engine should start as if nothing was done and run like previous.

I removed the tensioner, spun the injection pump pulley so the factory marks lined up and reassembled. After checking multiple revolutions by hand, I plugged in the thermostat plug and hit the key. Started right away with no throttle and no smoke, flared, then settled into only a slightly rough idle. Did not stall without throttle. Still got the "water" icon on the dash. Is that due to there being no coolant in it?

I now feel safe putting it all back together.

Thanks to everyone, as always!
