So today is the hottest day we've had since I fixed the jeep. Everything is going great, the jeep is driving great and I'm having a load of fun. I go to leave work today, and my check engine light is suddenly on, and I have no power.

Immediately I think the worst, that I have a torque converter issue or the tranny has gone, or maybe (somehow) I've broken all my rockers and lifters again, needless to say I feel sick....

I figure I might as well trouble shoot it, so I open it up and check the obvious things. CAC Hose - Brand new and good. Turbo hoses - Also new and good and tight, re-tightened just to check.

Turbo - No Play, good.

Fuel rail - Looks alright at first, I noted the line that comes off the main rail was not clamped where it connects. This leads me to check the plunger on the side of the fuel head, it's very spongy.

So I think, Well, air in the fuel. It kinda sounds like it's sucking air somewhere when it runs, but only sometimes. I decided to drive it because the sucking noise stops suddenly.

I have no power at all, it's like the turbo refuses to kick in. I mash the pedal to the floor and it only slowly accelerates like I have no turbo spooling up at all, but it will pull the jeep, just not up any hills (I found this out as I tried to leave the gas station parking lot I found myself in.)

So, I called a Tow truck, prepping for another $150 tow home which I didn't need or want, and called the wife to come get me (Because she loves my Jeep, rofl).

As I'm waiting for the tow truck, I figure I at least need to spin the jeep around so he can pick it up from the front, as I pulled in forward to the parking space. After I had let it set, it seemed like the turbo was spooling up and I had power again!

I immediately called off the tow truck, and called the wife and told her to stand by, I was going to try to get it home.

I drove it 22 miles home with nary an issue, boost was good and the Jeep was very responsive. I didn't really do anything. So I shut it down when I got home, and now it's suddenly making the noise again. I haven't tried to drive it since I got home, because I figure I better fix this issue before it becomes more expensive.

Sounds like a injector? Nothing leaking? Check the codes. With the CEL it should show a code.

check your fuel filter.


mine's done that about a dozen times since new - limp mode, no codes - wait a couple of minutes restarts - run's fine.

most of the problems tracked back to a bad tank of fuel causing a clogged filter - and it got better with Powerservice and a filter change.

the kick into limp mode is normally at a point you're using extra fuel (and once it kicks in - you have to cycle the ignition to clear it)

I've been running PowerService with every tank.

I replaced the fuel filter when I did my Rockers less than 3k ago.

I'll try it, always possible. Just so happens I have a NAPA Gold fuel filter waiting in the garage.

Did you change the oil since the rocker work? What oil are you using? The noise sounds like a Injector or Lifter tap???

I had the exact same noise on my Sprinter, it was a known issue for the 2.7 I5 engines. A copper washer on the bottom of the injector starts leaking and you get fuel up the injector and on the top of the head cover. Check around the injectors for any traces of fuel. I don't know if that can happen on these engines, but the design is similar.

Strongly suggest you replace fuel filter. It is cheap, easy and rules out a clogged one. I one clog several hundred miles after a filter change from bad fuel.

Sort of sounds like a pulsing compression or exhaust leak. Does the speed of the sound change as the RPMs come up? Might look at base of injectors for blown crush washer/"O" ring causing a pulse of compression sound. Might check around intake elbow/EGR for exhaust side boost leak.

I'll check all of those things and change the fuel filter this weekend. Sun/Mon.

I spent all day yesterday on a derailment and now I get to play catch up on all my office stuff for the next 2 days trying to do 3 days worth of work.

The lack of power you experienced is "limp mode." Anything that causes limp mode will lock in the limp until you shut off the engine, then it will reset. The problem is that practically everything sets off limp mode. A marginally clogging fuel filter will do it. A fuel leak will do it. So will almost anything else.

Whenever you hit limp mode, pull over, switch off, and restart. If the error condition is not persistent, that will clear the limp. Things like a marginal fuel filter, for example, cause trouble only when you are on the go pedal, which, of course, you would not be on restart.

@Hexus, you've had more than your share of issues, to be sure. You are due some flawless driving time for the next couple decades.

I changed the oil 1400 miles after the rocker change to be safe and to get the assembly lube out. Using Rotella T6 5W-40 now, thinking about going back to 0W-40 but not sure.

It's injector noise, but it's the same noise I had when I had vapor lock issues after my rebuild, I now know the difference (I think) between rockers/lifters and injector noise.

We need an emote of someone setting a vehicle on fire. Truly we do....

Definitely sounds like a leaking copper washer at the bottom of the injector.

You can first check that the screws that secure the crows foot clamp are tight, after that you'd have to pull the injectors and replace the copper washer and the o-ring that goes around the injector body to seal out water/dirt from corroding in the bore.

I'm going to start a new topic on this, since I now believe it's a fuel injector issue even though I replaced the copper washers on the bottom and the O-Rings on the top I believe it's an injector issue.

I change my filter every 10K or the first time it hicups, and that is some times only a couple thousand miles. Usually they do not see 10k.
