Is there a way to tell which TC is in the Liberty I'm looking at?

I have the service records for it and they indicate that the TC was replaced 1/12/2007 along with reprogramming the ECM/TCM.

I'm wondering if they replaced the TC with an OEM or Euro TC. Can I tell from anything on the outside?

Thanks,
Jon

Did you hear about the guy who was hooked on brake fluid?
He swears he can stop any time.

No you cannot tell from the outside. In fact IIRC there is no way to tell if you are holding a Euro in your hands absent having the box it came in or cutting it open to check the springs.

In any case what you describe is the standard F-37 recall service which included ECM reprogramming to reduce torque and TCM reprogramming to adjust the shift points to slightly higher speeds and if inspection indicated it was needed replacement of the TC. The standard TC replacement is the same one that was installed in most all 05s (very early 05s had a TC with a plastic part of some sort that died an early death) and all 06s. In extremely rare cases some were able to score a Euro TC as part of this service but as far as I know only upon request.

While that OEM TC could be stronger my suggestion is to just drive it until it dies or it doesn't. Be sure to perform regular fluid/filter changes and only use ATF+4 and you could be ok indefinitely. When you get the GDE tune go for the EcoTune not the hot tune or the Stage II Turbo/tune as the OEM TC won't handle the latter levels of power.

I'll definitely be getting a tune, and wondered whether the eco-tune is ok for towing a trailer.

It's about a 3500 lb trailer and I live in somewhat hilly country.

The last thing I want is to get stranded on the side of the road with 2 (albeit small) horses in a trailer because my Torque convertor blew up.

Will the eco-tune protect the OEM TC well enough? I know nobody can say for certain, but what's your best guess?

Thanks,
Jon

Talk to to Keith at GDE about about a TCM tune, that would be the best way to manage your TC.

I'd recommend you send Keith at GDE an email and ask, he is exceptionally responsive. The 2 tunes you probably should look at are the EcoTune and the Full Torque EcoTune. I suspect the former is slightly easier on the TC than the latter. I can tell you that stoutdog and I did the I-10 run (moderately hilly sections in places) with in his 06 fully loaded with a kayak on top pulling a fully loaded 5X8 uHaul trailer (weight ca. 2,000 lbs) with zero problems on an OEM TC with the EcoTune and a basic GDE TCM tune; see viewtopic.php?f=5&t=69117&p=739421#p739421

About all we had to do was anticipate upcoming hills with the go pedal foot a bit; if you let cruise handle things the tranny would down shift part way up a hill whereas getting a bit better run at the same hill would avoid the down shift.

I won't say it's impossible for a TC to die an abrupt death because it is but in most all cases you are going to get very obvious TC shudder under load well before a TC will go out and that shudder can be mitigated by backing off on the load as an interim solution.

Bottom line is I would spend your money on the GDE tune first and not just run out and replace the TC unless 1) money is burning a hole in your pocket or 2) you can do it yourself. I'm only running the Suncoast because I gave myself a retirement present of a GDE Stage II turbo and the required TC upgrade (that turbo would induce TC shudder instantly if you stomped the go pedal) and I went with Suncoast because 1) I did not want to do the work and 2) Suncoast would and they were not that far from home.

Thanks for taking the time to reply!

Money's not even making my pocket warm. I'm happy to yank and swap a TC or maybe even build my own from parts. In fact, I've been reading about all the 'kits' available for the big Dodge diesels where you can basically put together your own TC from parts and it sounds like fun to me! I'm sure there are people on the forum who would be knowledgeable enough to help with doing that.

I've also been quoted from www.torqueconverter1.com: Part #600sp - has 350 ft lbs clutch lock up. $195 It's what they call out as their Heavy Duty TC for the CRD Liberty.

You have the standard TC replacement. The Euro TC did not come out until 2 years later. I spoke with Keith about the same issue as mine was replaced in 12/06. I am debating between the ECO tune and the Full Torque ECO Tune. Keith said there is a possibility of experiencing shudder especially when towing due to the higher torque output. The ECO is detuned upon lockup to 270 LB/FT to minimize this issue.

Is it possible for you to take if for a test drive and try and get it to shudder?

Yeah, how long should it take to get to appropriate temperature? I live in hawaii...it's about 80 degrees F here today.

I believe I read that the shudder test should be done after the engine/transmission is at running temperature.

The dealership is at the base of a long steep hill, where the speed limit goes from 35 to 55 and gives a real good excuse to stomp on the accelerator pedal! That's basically what I need to do, if I understand correctly.

Thanks,
Jon
