Surging when cold

First just want say Hi. Been looking around for a few weeks now, after picking up my 05 crd. Now the issue I am having is, when cold I seem to get surging. I have replaced the fuel filter. Primed the system and bleed it 20 or so times over the last few weeks. Still have the surging. Last night, I dropped the tank and go rid of the poopy plastic fuel lines. At the same time, I plumped and wired up a gm6.5 lift pump. I bleed the system and took it for a drive. Every think was great. This morning start it up and head to work and same thing, surging all the way to work.
The Jeep
05 crd limited.120k
Timing belt and water pump at 105k
new updated fuel filter head
cleaned the map sensor
GM-6.5 Lift pump in-stalled.
ORM done.

Any help would be great.

Hi Brianawd,

I am experiencing something similar with my 2005 Jeep Liberty CRD Limited (see my thread about it: viewtopic.php?f=5&t=74930), and I wanted to find out a little bit more about your symptoms.

1.) When you wrote "surging", what do you mean? In other words, does the engine idle alone surge high/low (when you start it cold) and then return to the normal baseline idle after it's warmed up? Or is the surging a physical movement as well ... like when you come to a stop (while the transmission is in Drive) and then the "surge" is pushing against the brakes, while you're stopped?

2.) Does the surging occur when the vehicle is in Drive only, or also in Neutral/Park?

3.) What might have precipitated this (meaning, what work might you have had done to the vehicle recently, or any changes in the fuel/fuel line)?

4.) What do you mean by "cold," (meaning is it 0 degrees outside when starting running the vehicle, or simply that the engine hasn't warmed up)?

Let's figure this out together.

If does in in park and in drive. when its cold. I need to check and see if its doing it in neutral.
It acts like I'm drive like a girl that is always on and off the throttle.

Park and drive.

Not sure as its started doing this about a week after I got it.

cold is between 35-45degs

Let's figure this out together.

On a side note. This is really starting to piss me off. I used to be a diesel tech. I worked on every thing from 6bt cummins to ISX. C12 cats to series 60 detroit diesel. But this little 2.8 has me wanting to burn it to the ground.

Could be EGR related. Unplug the MAF sensor and see if problem goes away.

Thats the first thing I did they day I picked it up.

List of what I have done

Changed Oil and filter
replaced fuel filter
replaced air filter
Cleaned Map sensor
Added GM 6.5 lift pump
Replaced poopy plastic fuel lines with 3/8 rubber fuel line.
Unpluged Maf the day I picked it up.

On the to do list
GDE Hot tune
Exhaust
Intercooler pipes
replace serpentine belt,pulleys. auto ten, altornater decupler.

Mine has been doing the same thing since new, I don't feel it all the time. This morning was really noticeable, I have always thought it was the viscous heater cycling. I don't notice it above 2000rpm, but 1300-1400rpm I do notice. I had It before the gde tune, and after the gde tune. That eliminates the egr idea. This morning was just above freezing, and it only happens when cold out, and engine cold.

Mine does it in the mornings. My drive to work is about 25 miles and it does it the whole time. But On the way home it runs perfect. Today I pulled off the charge pipes and they are covered in Oil. The charge pipe that goes to the FCV had Oil pooling in the low spot. I am going to pull the intercooler and flush it out. I am also going to install a provent.When I had all the pipes off I checked the turbo. No play in or out so the thrust bearing is good and No up and down movement. Oh I also checked for air in the fuel head again and this time there now not one single air bubble.

So the drive to work this morning was perfect. Only thing I did yesterday was unplug the FCV and cleaned out the charge pipes. So hoping this has me on the right track to nail this issue down

Mine does it only when I first start it up. It doesn't matter if it's the first start cold in the morning or in the middle of the day after driving it to a few different places. But mine ONLY does it at idle. Once I step on the throttle a bit it's smooth and doesn't do it as far as I can tell at any RPM over 800. I've replaced MAP and just about everything else on mine!

But I'm glad you brought the subject up because I was curious too!

Ok still having this issue. This morning it was doing it again. This time I wanted to see if it was engine or trans related. I was doing around 55mph going up a hill and it was surging. I took it out of OD and as soon as I did that the surging went away. When I put OD back on the surging was gone. So I'm think line pressue issue or air in the trans. any one else have this issue?

Did you ever test to see if the surging continued in Neutral? I highly recommend checking that too, since that can help determine if it is engine-based or transmission-based.

For me, as of March 3rd (when I had my mechanic drain and replace the transmission fluid and filter), I've been experiencing some similar engine/transmission surging issues ... but only at stops (while the transmission is in Drive). My mechanic test drove my KJ on Friday and confirmed the symptoms, and so he's going to drop the pan on the Tranny, opened it up, and replace the APT filters he installed with an OEM set, reseal it all and make sure it's done right this time.

I'll keep ya posted if that removed the engine/transmission surging issues on my side ... it might be related to your's.

No surging issues in Neutral. Only does it in park and Drive. I'm going to drain the trans and change both filters and fill it back up with ATF+4

Hey Brianawd,

I figured out the fix with my 05 KJ's surging issues and wanted to share with you! Make sure your Transmission Filter kit is OEM 5179267AC is the filter kit & 5013470AD is the filter , not an ATP one that says it'll work/fit.

Here is a copy of my post on my thread:

The fix to both issues of my 05 Jeep Liberty CRD's Engine/Transmission-Surging and Transmission Drain-Back have been solved!! ... As many people referenced, the problem was the aftermarket Transmission filter kit that the initially mechanic installed.

Back in March when he did the work the first time, he did not use an OEM Transmission filter kit & filter (5179267AC is the filter kit & 5013470AD is the filter). Instead he chose to install an ATP Transmission Filter kit & Filter (B-196 & B-200). Once he dropped the pan, put in the OEM Filter kit and filter, and sealed/filled my Jeep back up .. it shifts great without any lag and there is no surging ever!!

Let me know how it all turns out.

Thanks for the info. I replaced both filters with OEM units. all issues have been fixed and the jeep runs smoother and shifts better. Now time for GDE tune and lift
