My mechanic is going to do the timing belt on my 05 Liberty Sport CRD, but he does not have the special tool that holds the cams from turning. Can something else be used instead, or is this tool required and if so, where can I get one? I'm in Dixon Illinois. Thanks.
You need both the camshaft locating pins and the cam sprocket tool if you are to do the water pump. I have seen firsthand (well, secondhand) the results of not having the proper tools to hold the cam sprockets tightly. It may well be that there are a number of options that will work, but having something that will in fact hold the cam sprockets completely motionless relative to the camshaft and each other is NOT optional. Whether you use the Miller tools or something else you MUST hold the cam sprocket completely motionless and independently of the cam locating pins which will not take any significant torque.
I bought the Miller special tool and the VM cam pins, and am extremely pleased, having now used them on two CRDs. It makes the water pump replacement relatively easy. Anumber of folks have said good things about the Sealey tools which are reasonable and available in the UK.
Good luck!
