HD Cooling (towing q's)

Hi, newby here. We own a 2008 Jeep liberty Limited 4x4 KK. (luv it) We tow a travel trailer 17ft total wt is 3500 loaded full.

The jeep does not have a tow package from the factory. I did add the mopar class 3 hitch and mopar wiring harness.

We have towed many times in the fall and it tows like a dream. So, I am not asking advise on towing with the truck. I know my limits and the vehicle limits.

My q'ss on cooling: We are planning trips this summer. With the temp in the mid 90s + I do plan on adding a better trans cooler.

I would like upgrade my cooling system before I venture out in heat like this.

But, I cannot find any info of the HD cooling components from the factory supplied. ( I know what it lists on the webpage) So if anyone has a KK with the towing package can you post pics of what your cooling systems looks like. Or can give me description. I cant imagine they put mechanical fan in ths model. Or, am I just looking at upgrading the electric fan to a bigger one.

I'm of no help. I have done the same as you. There have been many posts about an electric/ mechanical fan, being needed.But can't seem to find it. And posts about adding a second Trans cooler. But my understanding is you should change the radiator to one with a Trans cooler in it. My parts guy at dealer has looked but not investigated it for me. Lack of funds on my part.

The factory tow package should have a clutch fan in addition to the electric fan, and power steering cooler located in the lower grille between the tow hooks.

The trans cooler is the upper (I believe) half of the A/C condenser. I'm not sure if they are the same size with or without the tow package

I think all KKs have the power steering cooler in the lower grille. I also think that might be the 1st picture we have ever seen of the mechanical fan lol. I'll also try to get a look at my trans cooler to compare.

Here is a pic of my radiator & trans cooler. I do not have the tow package, and my transmission cooler looks the same to me as DREDnot's.

From what I gather looking at the parts catalog (2008), The condenser/ trans cooler unit is the same with or without the tow package. The power steering hose assemblies show a difference, though.

It seems like the P/S cooler may have been updated between the 08 parts catalog, and my 2012, though.

Here are a few questions for tjkj2002, or anyone else who has worked on the 3.7 water pumps and mechanical fans.
I want to add HD cooling to my KK because it did not come with the factory tow package.

1) Can I simply add the fan and fan clutch to the water pump pulley on my 3.7, or are additional parts needed? So far I know I will need the following:
P/N 55116884AA fan, cooling, mechanical (blades)
P/N 52079718AD drive, fan (clutch)

2) Does the cooling system really need to be partially drained, or can the fan be fitted and installed without taking the radiator hoses and fan shroud off?

3) The FSM says to use a "Tool 6958 and adapter pins 8346" to hold the pulley in place while screwing on the fan assembly. They refer to a mounting nut that must be turned with a wrench as the pulley is held in place by the special tool. Would this nut need to be purchased separately, in addition to the parts above? Does anyone have part numbers for the tool and nut?

4) My water pump pulley shaft does not seem to have any threads, but the shaft extends out approximately 1/2 inch from the front of the pulley. Is there a cap on the shaft that can be removed to expose the threads, or must the water pump be replaced with a new one that has threads?
EDIT: The water pump pulley has a plastic cap over the threads. It's easy to remove.

I think those are all my questions right now. I want to be able to picture the whole process before I begin, so that I do it right. And I would rather do this job myself than take it to the shop.

1. Install fan blade assembly to viscous fan drive. Tighten bolts to 23 N·m (17 ft. lbs.) torque.
2. Position fan blade/viscous fan drive assembly into the radiator shroud.
3. Install the radiator shroud and fan drive assembly into the vehicle.
4. Install fan shroud retaining screws. Tighten screws to 6 N·M (50 lbs. in.)
5. Using Tool 6958, install the fan blade/viscous fan drive assembly to the water pump shaft. Tighten mounting nut to 50 N·m (37 ft. lbs.).
6. Install the upper radiator hose.
7. Fill cooling system (Refer to 7 - COOLING - STANDARD PROCEDURE).
8. Connect battery negative cable.

I will have to say that my experience with almost all shrouded fans is that there is not enough room to remove or insert the fan assy without taking the shroud off. You will be tempted to try and sneak it out but you will gouge up the radiator first, give up and remove the shroud anyhow. Looking at mine, it is way to crowded to use the lazy method and sneak it past.

The pulley holder is just a holding spanner. You may be able to fab one up, though. Don't be tempted to use something that grabs the pulley and damages the edge.

Thanks for the feedback, DREDnot. If I am the first one to upgrade to the HD cooling fan, I'll make a writeup for that. It sounds like draining the coolant bottle and removing the coolant/washer fluid bottles and the fan shroud will probably be mandatory. I think I will be able to rent the tool, or it's equivalent, at an auto parts store. I found the fan and fan clutch parts on http://www.moparpartsamerica.com for a lower price than on other websites. It looks like this project will cost under $200, but it may have to wait a bit, because as of last night I am troubleshooting a burning smell under the hood (oil leak?).

Got the fan and fan clutch in the mail from Mopar! I'm looking forward to being the first (that I know of) to add the HD cooling to a KK without the tow package, and documenting the process for a how-to. One last thing I need before I can start:

Four pretty beefy screws or bolts secure the fan to the fan clutch. The parts I ordered did not come with any. Does anybody have the part number for those, or know the size/type of bolt? Thanks!

Just a thought, check to see it your water pump has an M on the casting. It'll be on the bottom but I can't remember which side. If it does, there's a recall on it. May as well take care of that while you're in there. Or have the stealership do it. :2cents:

Thanks, JeepNCrowd and Ted15. Ted, I'll be sure to check for the "M" on the water pump casting. Plugging my VIN into the Jeep website brought up no open recalls, so hopefully I'm good.
