updated glow plug kit NLA from Mopar!

FYI: The Mopar "updated" glow plug kit is now no longer available from Mopar. You must now purchase the glow plugs individually and the relay separately. The cost is quite high. I have been able to source the SAME Bosch Glow plugs from a supplier I use for MUCH cheaper. I am working on getting my jeepdieselparts.com website operational, and will offer the plugs as well as the relay on there. If anyone needs them in the meantime, let me know. I can source them for a reasonable price. A whole kit will run, as of now, around $125.00 plus shipping.

Also, I have a deal on getting factory tools. While they are not quite cheap, they are cheaper than if you bought them online. I can pass the savings on.

That would explain why the "kit" price has gone up to ~$400 on ebay recently..

When I saw that, I wondered why. I was quoted, my cost, over $70.00/ea. for just glow plugs from Mopar. Again, that is for EACH plug, and not including the relay!

THIS is why I will unlikely buy another Chrysler vehicle! I really like the new Cummins and the JK's are awesome, going to be hard to get the bad taste from the CRD out of my mouth.

I could really use a set. I would be glad to be able to get them that cheap! I am getting a GDE tune next week. How does this affect my need to have my computer reprogrammed for the different glow plug voltage on the new ones?

This is why I will NEVER by another Chrysler vehicle unless it comes with a 15 year, 200,000 mile, $0 deductible warranty. Maybe I'd consider used if it was really, really cheap.

I just can't get a good feeling that these are going to work adequately with the winter temperatures we get here.

if you are about to get the tune you need to decide now. If you go with the 5v you'll want GDE to do the tune ready for the 5v ones now and save you $50 later. Just make sure you get the new plugs in before winter starts or in your neck of the woods you will have starting issues pushing only 5v thru 7v plugs

What do you recommend? I assume the glow plugs in this post are the newer 5 volt models. I have run with two glow pugs showing as out on the computer for over a year now. It was no problem this winter. They have never come on even long enough to see light, unless you are really watching for it. This makes me think that I should just go cheap and keep the old style plugs.

going cheap could cost you, the reason for the new plugs is the old ones break, when they do that they can take out your engine. That would be uber expensive, IMHO keeping the ceramics is NOT a option.

I choose the 5v Mopar steel units, simply because I got a good deal on a set on the forum ($100) and already had the GDE ECO Tune, so knew the tune for the plugs would only cost me another $50.

If I hadn't gotten the deal I would have most likely bought the Euro 7v plugs for approx $180. I live in the south and while I have seen some people state that their cold starting was not as good with the GX3123 as with the OEM Ceramic 7v units I really don't expect that is an issue for me.

If I lived back in Canada I think I would have gone with the Mopar 5v upgrade, I haven't seen as many comments on their cold starting not being as good as the ceramics but i have seen one or two.

To repeat my first post, it could be a VERY expensive mistake to keep the old ceramic glow plus in your crd.

Ceramics MUST be replaced when they fail electrically! They will break apart and DESTROY your motor........

(Keith believes ceramics are OK as long as they are working. He still has them in both of his.)

What about 4 for $95 bucks on ebay? They say 7v and from Italy. I followed the link that papaindigo shared, but it seemed like a hassle to place an order with them from U.S.
Do I need to replace the controller too?

How hard is it to swap the glow plugs? Also 5v steel for the northern people seem to be common? What controler needs to be upgraded? I wish I would have known about this as I just got the GDE tune >_<

Don't know about the eBay steels and at that price I would not trust them to be compatible 7v units unless someone bought an Etecno1 set and did not need them.

As to ordering from Etecno1 it is no harder than ordering from any other internet vendor. Select product, fill in shipping destination info and regular US credit card info, and place order. IIRC you can pay for expedited shipping if you want to spend the money. Regular shipping takes 7-10 days.

I bought and replace all of them with the eBay ones 1000k miles ago. They are the Etecno1 diesel glow plugs as the link above from papadingo. took 2 weeks to get here from Italy but now I don't have nightmares of the ceramic plugs tearing my engine apart..

your best chance in my opinion for a free of trouble plugs swap is to have to engine warmed up (not hot), and use an impact wrench with torque control (I used a Makita 14.4v impact). make sure to use a 10mm deep socket with and small extension as you want to be as straight as possible when unscrewing the old plugs.
One more thing, when you put the new ones in make sure to use an anti-seized compound and only apply 110 inch-lbs of torque.
