You are overdue time wise. 7 years or 100k. The rubber dry rots.

Taroo, where are you located? This timing belt get-together (if it happens) will be just on the north side of I-95, right above Wilmington, Delaware!

Mike - Sorry for the confusion in locations, I edited my previous post. If you are coming down to Wilmington, then according to Google Maps, you might be able to throw a rock and hit the location where I may be doing this job. West Grove is near the intersection of US 1 and 41, that is as close a location as I have at the moment.

You aren't coming to Illinois anytime soon are you?

I hope not, because here is an option for everybody to consider:

I will most likely be driving to NYC next week (starting to travel from South Florida on the 28th) and I would be suggesting a central meeting place at a hotel somewhere just south of Philadelphia along I-95. My plans have me on the way back from NYC on Friday or Saturday for this, I would be happy to leave early to arrive at the CRD-timing hotel at about 9AM or so.

I had been discussing with Everett about doing his timing belt alone, BUT if there are just 2 others that want to jump in on this, I will do it for a group rate of $400 each, and no travel costs! Thats right, JUST the discounted labor for three or more CRD timing jobs! By myself, I can do each CRD in about 3 hours, possibly less. With assistance and sharing of tools, all the CRDs should be up and running again by mid afternoon. I would be willing to discuss water pumps and glow plugs, but anything more serious probably doesn't want to be done here.

Thoughts?

As of now, my intent is to do my belt, water pump, and thermostat here in Westport, PA next weekend, 8/2-8/4 if anyone wants to come up to help, watch, join in and work on their own, etc...
I have everything I need to get this done. I am borrowing the CORRECT tools from a friend, including the VM.1085.

Nope. The tools did not arrive in time for Saturday unfortunately. I may try to do it next weekend, but we will see... My work schedule may prohibit doing this anytime soon now.

Well, even though you are not at the mileage... you are at 8 years. You need to think about doing it now!

The age of that belt is certainly a big concern now. I just finished the job for another member, and his belt looked in good shape generally, but was definitely showing signs of age on the rubber coatings.

The belt is Kevlar covered in rubber to protect it. When the belt wants to go... There won't be any prior warning. 8 years (even 7 for the 2006) is a loooong time to ask any belt to remain in service, especially one so critical.

Wow...okay.....good to know. I have suspected that time is as much an impact as mileage. I will start pulling together the parts. Once I get them I will have to decide if I need/want some help or if I tackle it myself. Hmmm....

DC isn't terribly far from Savannah, so if you want assistance or want me to do the job for you... We can discuss that in PM.

I would prefer that they finished that disaster area that VADOT has made of I-95, but that probably will exist until the year 2345.

The traffic coming back from NYC was nothing short of insane. 2 hours to drive from Queens to the NJ Turnpike across Staten Island. 5 hours on the Jersey Turnpike down to Wilmington De. 16 hours from there to Savannah!

This is a drive that I have made many times, and the TOTAL amount of time is normally about 14 hours one way from Savannah to NYC. Everyone in the entire North East was on the road in the last few days. I REALLY hope that everyone decides to stay home or at least leaves at different times. :banghead:

X2 Did mine this past winter and the belt was aged and cracked. I am glad I did not wait any longer.

The Elephant in the room that no one is talking about, then or now, is that the Foreign (Every where else but here) Belt Change Interval is 62,000 Miles.

Only in America is the belt change interval 100,000 Miles. Everywhere else in the world it's 100,000 km - 62,000 Miles.

I don't know why we're special, besides our letigious society and 100,000 Mile Power Train Warranties.

Alas I digress...

If Chrysler had made the belt more affordable at their dealerships, people might have been more interested in a shorter interval. That said, NO diesel I am aware of from ANY manufacturer comes with a 100k mile warranty. They just don't want to do it.

Replacing only the belt (if you have the tools and the mods done) isn't too bad, and the belt cost is reasonable at $75 or so... But even after 100k miles, the numbers on the back of the belt are still readable. That is impressive.

Right now, for ANYONE that still has the original belt (and if you can't say HONESTLY that you know exactly when / who changed it... You probably have the original)... Keeping that original belt in place is VERY VERY dangerous. Summers are getting hotter, winters are getting colder and drier, and that rubber won't last forever. Kevlar is very strong in certain ways, and VERY fragile in other ways. 8 years. 8 years. EIGHT LONG YEARS. That is how long that has been in service.

Ignore this at your engine's (and wallet's) own peril.
