According to the ebay listing, they have the heads for the USA for 313 pounds sterling, which translates to $491 shipped.

If you call them, they will usually beat those numbers by a fair bit, because nobody likes paying ebay fees. I'd trust one of their tested heads all day long.

Well that's not nearly as bad as I thought.. if nobody buys my jeep within the next couple weeks ill pull the motor and fix it. I just don't want to poor money into it and then sell it taking two losses..

I seriously doubt that you would lose money on it. You are looking at about 4k for it right now, right?

If you fix it and sell it then, you should get at least 8k, possibly more if it is in good shape otherwise and moderate on the mileage (I don't remember) and it will obviously have a fresh timing belt now.

That math is a good investment all day long, double your money for somewhere around a 1500 investment plus your time. Sadly, your time doesn't factor into it, that is therapy.

Guy in my area is selling his engine turbo to egr, injector to oil pan complete set up all torn down. And guess what... Dropped valve cyl 2!!!! Must be a Rhode island thing.. anyway he wanted 1500 then 1000 now he wants 500. Should I buy it put one of his good cylinders in mine, (id buy rings and bearings of course), use one of his good 3 injectors.. (no 2 destroyed) buy a head , gaskets, belt kit, STEEL glow plus w/ module Having spare turbo, two injectors and misc parts.. anybody see a flaw in this plan? You won't hurt my feelings. Need you guys 2¢

Oh and can someone confirm that the glow plug causes this to happen? I want to make sure I only build it once. And would you guys re-use the rockers cam etc? No flat spots or damage but I'm just cautious at this point

I would get a new liner, o-ring and shim kit. The other engine might not have the same liner protrusion as your block. A new piston and ring kit for sure. A check of the rod bearings in that cylinder would also be worthwhile based on the pounding it took.

All the spare parts - it might be worth it just to have that on hand, and you will get that money back if you sell the parts as needed to other members.

I don't know that I would try and re-use a liner, do what Keith suggested - fresh liner and rings. In the case of the piston and rod... I might be persuaded to reuse one of those, with fresh rod bearings, if they look good coming out. If a replacement from The VM Specialist is cheap enough (and new) however... Might not be the worst idea to keep that block intact for the moment, and have it as a spare if someone needs it.

Just don't do what my idiot mechanic did, and store it outdoors and uncovered. Bastage cost me a perfectly rebuildable block when I TOLD HIM that I wanted it back to rebuild.

I work in RI. If you decide to pass, please let me know.

So, it is still unclear whether glow plug failure is the culprit?

Thanks,

Thanks guys. Ill put a new liner, liner o-rings, and piston rings and bearings. Where's the best place to get parts. I check IDparts.com but seems real pricey. I heard vm specialist? What's the site.. and also I would feel 10x better about this if I could get a confirm that these engines with ceramic glow plugs end up possibly self destructing. Anybody ever contact vm?

http://www.vmdieselspecialist.com/ is the website, but I think you will find that IDparts is selling you the same stuff at or below what it would cost you after the exchange rate and shipping is added.

Yeah, the prices for certain things might suck... But then again, they are one of the only suppliers for these engines in the USA, and they are matching / beating the prices for the best-priced UK supplier I have ever seen for VM motors. I'm not just beating their drum for fun, and I get nothing from them for the kudos... But I fully believe in supporting those that best support us.

Corey is an active member here, and I bought my TDI timing kit from him without a second thought. I could have gone to several different suppliers for the tools and parts... He had it all in one place, and the price was very competitive. (I did search around)

Look at it this way - you only need one liner set, rather than 4. 75% savings!

Went to go pick up the engine and misc parts today and well looking at everything as a whole it wasn't worth it. Engine was completly siezed turbo was siezed and everything else was stacked on top of eachother in boxes.. I wouldn't trust it enough.. so looks Like I'm starting from scratch with all new parts

Aww bummer! I was really hoping for you that you could use that one as parts. Was it left outdoors in the rain like mine had been?
