Living in CA, if I need to reverse a Provent in order to pass my smog/emission inspection, is this the right hose? 53013729AC

On the 05 Parts Fiche (http://colorado4wheel.com/manuals/Jeep/ ... _FICHE.pdf) it is listed as "HOSE, Separator To Air Cleaner." I don't have the car in my possession yet, so I'm going purely off of pictures. Looks right to me.

Car is GDE tuned, so I may just keep it that way. Any thoughts?

That's it although solely for the purpose of a temporary hookup to pass inspection any piece(s) of heater hose that connect would probably work. However, if you plan to return to stock as you have the GDE tune, I'd be inclined to do so, best get the proper part.

Check the air box to turbo hose for a tear on bottom just in front of turbo as it may need replacing too. Be sure upper end touches MAF before tightening clamp.

Thanks. Will probably return that to stock then. One less thing to maintain.

Are there any other hoses or parts in the way of putting the stock one back on? And how are the hose ends attached to the CCV/turbo intake, just a press fit or with clamps? Looks mostly clear, but I can't tell from the pictures and I don't have the car yet.

Welcome aboard by the way and read Sam's NOOB guide if you have not already done so.

You will likely have to pull the passenger side CAC hose to get access (depending on orientation of the clamp at the turbo end you may need a long screwdriver or socket entensions - FYI I'm not fond of screwdrivers on clamps prefer socket - FYI safety note on clamps on plastic like intercooler and air box be sure hose and clamp are fully seated before tightening and run down snug + a bit no godzilla and recheck in a few days lest you crush the plastic). Pull the airbox to turbo hose out, check bottom for crack, and check turbo impeller for play (slight in/out and barely perceptible side to side is ok - more is bad). CCV hose is press fit to airbox to turbo hose and CCV

Thanks, papaindigo! I've pored over the noob guide multiple times. You can welcome me officially in a few weeks when I've picked the car up and driven it (without incident, hopefully) almost 2400 miles home. Long distance, I've had a mechanic in Pittsburgh do an inspection, specifically checking MAF values at idle (cleared by Keith at GDE), turbo play (mechanic claimed "minimal play" and that turbo was fine). The only item that concerned me was "engine has minor oil leaks" which could not be pinpointed (mechanic did not seem overly concerned). The car already has many of the goodies: GDE FT tune (though I don't believe TC was upgraded yet), Samco hoses, updated FF head, new metal glow plugs.

Thanks for the tips on the hoses. I'll check this out when I get the car.

ok on the clean air junk.

how many miles on the jeep?
has the timing belt been changed? what about other parts, tensionors, water pump, and such?

how long has it had the GDE tune ? rocker arm condition?

These could be great little diesels but with many cost cutting mistakes..they have problems. if you've been reading
this forum..you about them..

despit what I've been thru with my wife's jeep(minor compared to others, by far), we're happy with it.
there are some critical mod's..
lift pump
kill the EGR - gde tune handles this
gut the cat - ok maybe not in CA land

-dkenny
I hope to keep it running for another 200kmiles or more

dkenny, by the time I get it home, it will have about 70k miles on it. already GDE tuned as of 62k, or so, EHM/provent like device from 55k (not positive). It's had 3 owners, unfortunately very little history available on first owner up until 55k. But MAF @ idle test seems ok according to Keith.

I will need to decide whether to get an early TB job at 75k based on age of belt. What do folks think for a 2005?

05/06 not much difference. 05 could come with a limited slip differential but that was only an option. 06 came with electronic stability control, which some like and others don't, and no LSD option. Communication protocol with ECU is a bit different but still a kludge. Most all 05 and 06's effectively have the F-37 done (detuned ECU and TCM shift points raised and the OEM without the very early 05 plastic part - all those TCs died early so I'm sure none are on the road) although a few 05s "escaped" the TCM reprogramming either because the dealer "forgot" (sometimes with owner urging) to do it (if you final shift point is ca. 57 the TCM escaped the F-37 unless of course you have the GDE TCM tune which also has that shift point)

Having a Provent installed correctly dose not break any Smog/ emissions rules. As long as it directs the air back into the intake. It just removes oil from the CCV and returns air only to the intake. Oil collected in the Provent is drained at each oil change. If anything its cleaner emissions.

kjjet, in theory yes. But in CA, ANY modification to the emission system must use CARB approved components. Having not seen the car in person yet, I don't know what kind of blowby oil separator was used (Provent is not on the list, btw). Chances are most smog stations will have no idea what they're looking at and will fail me just because the emission system is modified, or refer me to a referee. Much easier to just put back to stock and consider whether to keep the mod after passing.

You are probably right although since the CRD was never sold new in CA it's a virtual certainty a CA inspection station won't have any idea what they are looking at to begin with. They would certainly notice a missing CAT and/or muffler but I doubt they would recognize a gutted CAT. Whether or not they would recognize rerouted CCV plumbing is an interesting question but probably not worth the risk if you are getting the GDE tune, which they won't recognize, which takes care of the soot problem.

Do you have to inspect yearly?
Even so, I would put the Provent back on after inspection. Ten minutes of work to save 200ml of oil going through the turbo.

I'll consider reinstalling it after seeing what the actual separator is that the PO used. It looks like it is mounted/housed in a homemade aluminum mount, so I can't get a good look at it from pictures. At purchase inspection the mechanic said they couldn't determine a brand because it wasn't labeled (I don't know how hard they looked).

If anyone has any ideas what I have, here's a pic:

I'm going to go ahead and welcome you too. Another fellow CA CRD owner! You'll have fun with it as long as you understand these are for diesel enthusiasts which it sounds like you are.

Do the timing belt! I did mine at 59k simply because the vehicle 7+ years old. I replaced all the rubber.

I also installed the Suncoast.

I recommend running Amsoil Full Saps European Car Formula 5w40. I'm convinced that most of the issues the R428 has are do to cheap oil. Time will tell! If my lifters and turbo last then it's oil if not then I'm wrong.

You'll enjoy it.

Hi KD6ICZ, great to see another local! Where'd you pick up your CRD? Sounds like a great low mileage rig. I also have Golf TDI.

I've seen lots of mention of Amsoil, but I don't really know where to get it, and how much does it cost?

I don't tend to do my own major work besides simple maintenance and mods. Did you do the TB yourself, or do you know a trusted shop/mechanic locally?

I found mine in San Diego last October on Auto Trader. It belonged to a guy in the military and it sat in indoor storage for most of its life. It had just been traded in for a small car and so I traded in my 99.5 Jetta TDI with 240k miles on it for the CRD.

I only do the basic stuff too and use a local European Car shop for the big stuff. Orange Motors in Anaheim. Since he didn't have a source for the parts he let me get them from ID Parts and bring them in. I also had him install the steel glow plugs from Italy while he had it taken apart.

For transmission work there is only one guy I trust in the US when it comes to high power diesel trans. He is located in Fullerton (world famous). Name of the shop is Inglewood Transmission. Mike is the owner. He replaced my TC and the electronic speed sensors. He also swapped out my TCU from GDE.

My current setup is GDE Hot Tune and TCU Eco Tune.

Oh and the Amsoil I get from a dealer in Marietta. A bit of a drive but he has a nice little shop with a lift so for $20 labor it totally worth it! I've had my service done at his shop for 13 years now so I really like his work. He let's me under the vehicle so I can check everything else out while its up in the air. The oil I believe is around $8 per quart??? I will pull a receipt and verify as soon as I get home.

The name of the shop is Amsoil Connection. Burke is the owner.

I have no idea what you have. But now i know why you want to remove it prior to inspection. Sure dose not look like a OEM install. The inspector would red flag that for sure.

I would take it off and leave it off. It dose not look like the hoses are large enough. My provent hoses are 2x them.
