Has any one on here ever had a custom converter built for the CRD from a shop in there home town with any luck? I was just going to buy a Euro or suncost. But one of my freinds gave me a #for a place here in my town that will build you a torque converter. I called and the guy on the phone had a ton of questions. Gave him all the info. I told him I would be pulling my converter this weekend and he said bring it in and he will cut it open when I'm there and go over the issue he finds and what he would do to fix the issues.

Hmm thats an interesting thought, BUT in the end will it be cheaper then the 700$ SC one.

He said it should not be more then a upgraded converter for a 5.9 cummins. price for them was between 250-350. Said he builds them all the time. I guess lots of the cummins guys have shutter issues to. I figure I may as well have him take a look.

Ask and see if you can get some specifications on what you will end up with.
clutch thickness, contact area for clutch, and lockup pressure would be real nice if possible... :)

With 5 years of trouble-free performance with the "euro" and the price being back in the $220 range, why experiment? I doubt there are any likely gains and loads of potential downside. If you are not happy at some point, is your local guy going to cover the $1000 that most places charge to R&R?

When the euro was over $500, suncoast was a consideration, but it is hard ro justify a $500 premium at this point. Have over 50K miles heavy towing experience with euro so far. GDE has much more.

Please show me where your finding the euro converter for $220. I have only been able to find them for $350-450+core.

If I'm not happy with converter I can just drop the tranny. I don't pay people to work on my cars. I can do every thing my self.

As for price for the local company. He said it should not be more then what he charges the cummins guys. Said on average its around $350. When he asked me what the issue was, I told him about the shutter and how the new oem converter has bigger springs in it. He said that sound like part of the problem and some of it could be oiling issues to the clutch. Said he could most likely get the upgraded parts and then do some of the oiling mods he does for the cummins converters.

Of all the placed I talked to about building me a converter, this guy asked the most questions and gave me more information on what he could do. Every other shop just said, they could build me a oem converter. The other nice thing was that he said he could have it done day I drop it off and we take a look at it.

So at $350 with no core charge and for shipping it seems to be a good price. I'm taking my converter in monday. So I will keep this updated to let you if I go this route.

Just signed the paper on my first KJ - 2005 Sport CRD Liberty 4x4. Have talked with GDE a bit. Looking at turbos and a tc.

I'm glad I found this site. I also have a 2002 F350 7.3, just traded my 2010 Golf TDI in. Had the first diesel sterndrive on Lake Powell. Wanted one of these CRDs since they came out.

I just got a quote from AST. Has anyone talked with them? The gave me the specs on all the discs/clutches/TC and everything. They build these for the Hemis but have provided several to Liberty CRD owners they say? AST has two converters they recommend. The first single clutch is good for 600lbs. Whole deal is about 3200? Three clutch is 200 more.

I had my 7.3 tranny built by a local in Phoenix that seemed to know what he was doing. Sonnax, Draco Billet 3c TC and best of everything else. Not totally extreme. Works perfect for three years so far.

I am going to drive my new rig back to AZ as soon as next week.

When I get this, what should I do? Some say to clean the ERG sensor with carb cleaner? Like the GDE eco/torque. Might go with that?
